Is Red Bull’s Sergio Perez leaving the team voluntarily? Helmut Marko responds to new Perez rumours – In the world of Formula One, speculation is never far away and this time it is Red Bull’s experienced driver, Sergio Perez. Following an unfortunate crash with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, rumours about Perez’s future at Red Bull Racing have resurfaced.

Could the veteran voluntarily step aside at the end of the season? Red Bull’s motorsport consultant, Dr Helmut Marko, has weighed in on the latest claims.

Perez’s future in doubt

The latest speculation comes from Perez’s native Mexico, where the press has suggested that the Red Bull driver could be planning to leave the team at the end of the season.

According to a report in Austria’s Kronen Zeitung, Perez is considering leaving the struggling Red Bull team on his own terms after the 2024 season.

However, these rumours don’t just hint at Perez leaving Red Bull, they go one step further and claim that the Mexican driver could retire from F1 altogether. The reason? A desire to spend more time with his family.

Perez, who has been a fixture in F1 since his debut in 2011, could be looking for an exit from the high-pressure world of motorsport to focus on life outside of racing.

Marko responds to the rumours

When confronted with these fresh rumours, Red Bull’s long-serving motorsport chief, Dr Helmut Marko, seemed taken aback.

“This is the first time I’ve heard about it,” Marko was quoted as saying by the Austrian daily *Kronen Zeitung*. However, Marko did admit that Perez’s family situation could be a factor, adding: “But his wife is expecting their fourth child, an interesting alternative.

While the remark seemed light-hearted, it’s clear that family commitments could indeed play a role in Perez’s future decision-making process.

Marko’s comments may have poured cold water on the immediate idea of Perez stepping down voluntarily. However, the speculation is unlikely to die down, especially given Red Bull’s turbulent season and the fact that personal circumstances can often influence career decisions in sport.

A Struggle for Success: Red Bull’s 2024 woes

Sergio Perez’s reported dissatisfaction may be partly due to Red Bull’s troubled season. Despite having his contract extended to the end of 2025 as recently as May 2023, Perez has been under immense pressure due to underwhelming performances and his results have fallen short of expectations.

The Mexican began the 2024 season with great promise, scoring four podium finishes in the first five races. However, his form subsequently nosedived and Perez has since struggled to make a significant impact. He currently sits seventh in the Drivers’ Championship with 143 points, level on points with Mercedes’ George Russell and a long way from the podium finishes and race wins he and Red Bull were hoping for.

The recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix proved particularly difficult for Perez. He collided with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz late in the race, costing both drivers the chance to finish.

While Russell benefited from their misfortune to finish third, Perez’s seventh place in the championship was symptomatic of his wider struggles. In fact, he has failed to finish in the top three in any race since the start of the season.

Red Bull’s slip in the constructors’ championship

Adding to the team’s woes, Red Bull has lost its lead in the Constructors’ Championship. The collision in Baku not only affected Perez’s standings, but also Red Bull as a team. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished fifth in Azerbaijan, leaving Red Bull without a podium finish. Meanwhile, McLaren capitalised on Red Bull’s misfortune to take first place in the Constructors’ Championship.

This slump in form, coupled with McLaren’s resurgence, has left Red Bull in a vulnerable position. It has led many to question whether the team, and Perez in particular, can recover and challenge for titles again.

What’s next for Perez and Red Bull?

While Perez’s departure from Red Bull is far from confirmed, speculation surrounding his future is likely to intensify as the season progresses. Family commitments, disappointing results and the pressures of top-level racing could all play a part in what could be a pivotal decision for the Mexican.

For Red Bull, the challenge will be to stabilise their form in the remainder of the 2024 season. Whether Perez remains with the team or not, Red Bull’s primary focus will be on regaining competitiveness and reclaiming the top spot in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

In the high-stakes world of Formula One, nothing stays the same for long, and rumours about drivers’ futures are part of the ongoing drama that keeps fans and insiders speculating. Whether Sergio Perez stays with Red Bull or leaves the sport, his decision will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for the team and the future of Formula One.
