The Mercedes boss explains why team declined to pursue F1 design legend Adrian Newey – Mercedes’ Toto Wolff explains the decision not to pursue renowned Adrian Newey, underlining confidence in the team’s existing structure, therefore declining to bid on Newey following the designers exit from Red Bull Racing.
In a major move that has sent shockwaves through the Formula One world, it has been confirmed that Adrian Newey, one of the most successful designers in the history of the sport, will join Aston Martin in the spring of next year. The announcement followed months of speculation and interest from numerous teams across the paddock, with Newey widely regarded as a transformational figure in the sport.

However, one team that many expected to make a serious bid for Newey’s services, Mercedes, have now publicly explained why they ultimately decided not to get involved in what was shaping up to be a competitive race for the design guru.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff addressed the situation over the weekend at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, giving an insight into the German carmaker’s strategy and the reasoning behind the decision.

Newey’s Red Bull departure sparks furore
Newey’s announcement earlier this year that he would be leaving Red Bull Racing, where he has masterminded multiple world championships, immediately sparked a flurry of interest. The 65-year-old has built an unrivalled reputation in the sport, having played a pivotal role in 25 Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships during his time at Williams, McLaren and Red Bull. His departure from Red Bull was seen as a seismic shift, opening the door for rival teams to bid for his services.
“I’ve been very flattered by the number of teams that have approached me and I’ve had discussions with some of them – not all of them,” Newey revealed in a recent interview, acknowledging the widespread interest in his expertise.
While Newey didn’t reveal which teams he had spoken to, it was widely speculated that most of the grid’s top contenders had made at least informal enquiries.
Mercedes, who have recently struggled to regain their dominance in the sport following a rule change that has tilted the competitive landscape, were naturally one of the teams thought to be in the mix.
However, despite being linked with Newey, Wolff has now shed some light on why the Silver Arrows ultimately decided against a serious pursuit.

Why Mercedes rejected a bid for Newey
Speaking to reporters at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Wolff acknowledged the widespread interest in Newey throughout the paddock.
“I think every team has looked at him somewhere,” commented Wolff. However, when pressed on whether Mercedes had made a bid for Newey, he provided a detailed explanation as to why they had refrained from making a serious play for him.
Wolff revealed that he and Mercedes technical director James Allison had considered the prospect of bringing Newey on board. However, after careful consideration, they concluded that they still believed in their current team structure, which has seen them win seven consecutive Constructors’ titles between 2014 and 2020.
“James and I discussed it and came to the conclusion that the structure we have today is the one we believe in and want to keep,” said Wolff.

“Great respect” for Newey’s track record
Wolff was quick to clarify that the decision not to pursue Newey was not a reflection of any doubts about his ability. In fact, the Austrian team boss went out of his way to praise Newey’s track record, calling him the “greatest designer in Formula One” based on statistics and success.
“I have a lot of respect for Newey,” said Wolff, adding that Newey’s track record speaks for itself. The designer has been the architect behind some of the most dominant cars in F1 history, and Wolff readily admitted that Newey would be a huge asset to any team he joined.
Ultimately, though, Wolff explained that Mercedes are confident in the current direction and personnel of their own team. “We refrained from playing poker for him because we believe in our team at the moment.”

Aston Martin’s gain
With Newey now heading to Aston Martin, a team that has been steadily rising up the pecking order following significant investment and the recruitment of key personnel, Wolff admitted that his arrival could be a game changer.
“If a team like Aston Martin, with this great name, could be part of the top group, it would be fantastic,” said Wolff.
The Austrian also pointed out that if Newey’s expertise is combined with the leadership of someone like Andy Cowell, a former Mercedes engine guru who has been linked with Aston Martin, the team could become a force to be reckoned with.
“Adrian is a great designer and when you combine that with someone like Andy Cowell… it’s a package to be reckoned with,” said Wolff, giving his backing to Aston Martin’s ambitions.

Mercedes look inwards
While Mercedes have decided not to aggressively pursue Newey, the team remain focused on their own efforts to return to the top of the sport. After struggling to adapt to the new technical regulations introduced in 2022, the Silver Arrows have shown signs of recovery, but still trail reigning champions Red Bull.
Wolff’s comments underline Mercedes’ belief in the talent and structure they already have in place. James Allison, who previously played a key role in Mercedes’ dominance, returned as Technical Director earlier this year after a period in a more advisory role, and Wolff has clearly put his faith in the team’s current set-up to deliver results.
As Newey prepares for his next challenge with Aston Martin, it remains to be seen whether Mercedes’ decision to stay the course will pay off in their quest to regain their place at the top of Formula One. For now, the sport’s most successful designer will look to help Aston Martin reach new heights, while Mercedes look to their own personnel to fuel their resurgence.
