Perez Sr hospitalised following Baku smash

Mexican Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez faces double disappointment after crash at Baku GP as father’s health scare adds to heartbreak – In a dramatic turn of events at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Sergio Perez not only suffered a disheartening race-ending crash, but also had to deal with the shocking news of his father’s health crisis.

While the Red Bull driver was battling for a podium finish, his father, Antonio Perez Garibay, suffered a serious medical emergency back in Mexico straight after witnessing his son’s crash on the circuit with Carlos Sainz Jr.

Perez struggles at Azerbaijan GP: A podium slip

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix, held on the fast streets of Baku, took a turn for the worse for Sergio Perez in the closing laps. The Mexican, who was battling with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz for third place, was on the verge of securing valuable points for his team. The battle between the two drivers reached its climax with just two laps to go.

Sainz, in his Ferrari, had the advantage as he out-braked Perez in the first corner to take third place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. However, the Spaniard’s grip on the podium was short-lived as he lost momentum in the following section, opening the door for Perez to launch a bold counter-attack.

But Perez’s aggressive move did not go to plan. In a high-pressure moment on the narrow streets of Baku, Perez collided with Sainz’s car, sending both cars into the barriers. The race ended in disappointment for both drivers, with their hopes of a podium finish dashed in an instant.

As Perez walked towards the wreckage, his frustration boiled over. He delivered a light punch to Sainz’s helmet, a clear expression of his anger and disappointment at what had happened.

Personal crisis unfolding: Antonio Perez’s health scare

While Sergio Perez’s on-track drama grabbed the headlines, a more personal crisis was unfolding in his home country. Unbeknownst to the Red Bull driver at the time, his father, Antonio Perez Garibay, was suffering from a medical emergency.

As reported by several media outlets, including RacingNews365 and Mediotiempo, Antonio Perez had been watching his son’s race from Mexico. During the critical moments of Perez’s crash with Sainz, his father is said to have experienced what is described as a pre-infarction. The 65-year-old was reportedly found unconscious in the bathroom of his home in Mexico City and was rushed to a local hospital for urgent medical attention.

Antonio Perez himself confirmed the details of his health scare, revealing that the fainting episode occurred immediately after he witnessed his son’s accident.

“Everything happened after the crash. The shock of the accident could have caused it. They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted,” he said in a statement to Mediotiempo. Fortunately, hospital officials later confirmed that he was in a stable condition and recovering well.

Double blow for Sergio Perez

For Sergio Perez, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was an opportunity to make a statement, not only for himself but also for his team in the Constructors’ Championship. After several frustrating races, Perez was finally showing the pace to rival his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen. His performance in Baku seemed to signal a turnaround, as he was on course to score crucial points and help Red Bull regain the lead in the standings.

However, the crash with Sainz dashed those hopes and Perez left Azerbaijan with zero points. The incident was particularly bitter as it marked one of the few times he had the upper hand over Verstappen. After the race, Perez expressed his deep frustration, saying he felt “incredibly frustrated” and “very sad for my team” as Red Bull’s lead in the Constructors’ Championship slipped away to McLaren.

The heartbreak of the race was compounded when Perez learned of his father’s health scare. The timing of the incident, which occurred almost simultaneously with his crash, added a deeply personal layer of distress to an already disappointing day for the Mexican.

Red Bull’s championship challenge in jeopardy

Perez’s misfortune in Baku not only affected his personal performance, but also Red Bull’s position in the Constructors’ Championship. With McLaren’s drivers taking advantage of the chaotic race, the British team managed to leapfrog Red Bull in the standings, leaving Christian Horner’s team playing catch-up.

Perez’s crash with Sainz could not have come at a worse time for Red Bull, who were counting on both their drivers to deliver points in an increasingly tight battle with McLaren. The Azerbaijan GP result left the team licking their wounds and looking for answers ahead of the next race.

The road ahead for Perez

As Sergio Perez moves on from the disappointment of Azerbaijan, both on the track and personally, the Mexican driver will be hoping for a speedy recovery for his father and better fortunes at the upcoming races.

While Formula One often brings its share of ups and downs, the events in Baku proved particularly testing for Perez, who will need to regroup both mentally and physically for the challenges ahead.

Red Bull will also be looking to bounce back as they chase McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship. With the season still in its early stages, there is plenty of time for the team – and Perez – to turn things around. But the drama of Baku will undoubtedly remain a significant chapter in Sergio Perez’s 2024 Formula One campaign.
