Schumacher “strongly” advises Sainz against…

In Formula One, decisions to change teams can make or break a driver’s career, just ask Daniel Ricciardo. In the midst of this tension, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has strongly advised Carlos Sainz against a potential move to Williams, suggesting that a move to Audi would be more beneficial.

2024 has been an outstanding year for Carlos Sainz Jr, marking a period of significant success and development with Ferrari which is ironic as the Spanish driver won’t be renewing his contract come the end of this year. After several seasons of promise and potential, Sainz has finally emerged as a leading contender in the championship race, outperforming his team-mate Charles Leclerc and demonstrating a consistent ability to compete at the highest level.

Impressive start to the season

Sainz has been in remarkable form since the start of the 2024 season. His third-place finish in the Bahrain Grand Prix set the tone for his most successful season to date. This early podium was a clear indication of his improved performance and the improvements Ferrari have made to their car.

Sainz’s prowess was particularly evident at the Australian Grand Prix, where he took a commanding victory in front of the Aussie fans. This victory was not only a personal triumph, but also a statement about his ability as a driver to handle immense pressure and deliver when it matters most. His performance in Australia highlighted his improved racing skills and strategic acumen, essential factors in his success in 2024.

Outperforming Leclerc early season

Sainz certainly had the upper hand of team mate Charles Leclerc this season up until the Chinese Grand Prix where his Monagasque Ferrari stablemate has come into form and has typically finished ahead.

But early in the 2024 season, Sainz consistently outperformed teammate Charles Leclerc. Historically, Leclerc has been seen as Ferrari’s leading driver, but this year Sainz has turned that perception on its head and has on occasion also demonstrated superior qualifying performance.

A key component of Sainz’s successful season has been his consistency. Unlike previous years, when he occasionally struggled with reliability issues or strategic missteps, in 2024 Sainz has finished in the points in almost every race. His ability to consistently bring the car home in strong positions has been a key factor in his championship challenge.

Ferrari’s 2024 car has seen significant improvements, particularly in terms of aerodynamics and power unit performance. Sainz has been quick to adapt to these changes, getting the most out of the car. His technical feedback has also been instrumental in Ferrari’s development process, helping the team to make iterative improvements throughout the season.

Doors fast closing for Sainz

As the 2024 Formula One season draws to a close, Carlos Sainz Jr finds himself in a unique and somewhat precarious position. Despite his remarkable success with Ferrari this year, his contract is due to expire at the end of the season. This contractual uncertainty has sparked intense speculation about his future, even as the in-form Spaniard’s options at other top teams appear to be rapidly dwindling.

Sainz’s impressive performances have undoubtedly boosted his market value, but places at the most coveted teams are filling up fast.

Mercedes, for example, appear to be leaning towards nurturing their young talent, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, rather than bringing in an experienced driver like Sainz. Team principal Toto Wolff has expressed confidence in the potential of his young drivers, hinting at a possible long-term strategy focused on developing home-grown talent, but in the background is most certainly gunning for Max Verstappen.

Red Bull, another top contender, has also shown limited interest. The team appear happy with their current line-up, particularly with the consistent performances of Sergio Perez in support of Max Verstappen. Despite Sainz’s clear ability and proven track record, Red Bull’s emphasis on stability and continuity makes a move unlikely. Their strategic focus remains on maximising their current dynamic rather than introducing a new variable into the mix.

Schumacher’s strong recommendation for Audi

Ralph Schumacher’s advice comes as Sainz as, according to reports, Sainz has received interest from several teams, but Audi’s managing director Andreas Seidl has been particularly keen and is said to have made the Spanish driver a lucrative offer.

Audi would appear to be a likely destination for Sainz should negotiations with the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull fail. However, recent rumours from Monaco suggest that Sainz could be considering Williams, attracted by the flexibility it offers compared to a long-term factory contract with Audi. A move to Williams would give Sainz the flexibility to re-evaluate his career path in 2025 and potentially join a more promising project.

Williams: A dead end?

Despite these considerations, Ralf Schumacher has spoken out strongly against the potential move. In a candid video interview on the Formel1.de YouTube channel, the ex-driver for Williams made his stance clear: “I would first prefer the one who wants me 100 per cent.”

This statement underlines Schumacher’s belief that a firm commitment from Audi, a team clearly keen to secure Sainz’s talents, would be the better choice.

While Williams team principal James Vowles has shown an interest in Sainz, Schumacher argues that Sauber, under Seidl’s leadership, have persistently courted Sainz and made him their top priority. This long-standing interest, coupled with Seidl’s previous association with Sainz at McLaren, adds weight to Audi’s offer.

Disappointment with Williams

For Sainz, the chances of joining top teams such as Red Bull or Mercedes appear slim to non existant. Red Bull appear to favour Sergio Perez, while Mercedes’ Toto Wolff is said to be considering young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

“They could have let him sign,” commented Schumacher, suggesting that these teams are not as committed to Sainz as Audi appears to be.

Schumacher did not mince his words about Williams, describing it as a “dead end” for Sainz.

“So far, Williams has really disappointed me,” he remarked, referring to the team’s lacklustre performance this season. Despite a promising upward trend last year, Williams’ points tally remains empty until Monaco in 2024, paralleling Sauber’s struggles. Schumacher attributed Williams’ earlier successes to the influence of former team principal Jost Capito, suggesting that recent performances have been underwhelming.

A better fit with Audi

Aside from performance issues, Schumacher also expressed concerns about the environment at Williams. He questioned whether Sainz would be happy there and suggested that Audi, with its links to Sainz’s family, might offer a more suitable environment.

“I think in the long term he would have a better choice or a better chance at Audi because of his father’s connections with the company,” he said.

A decision has yet to be made, but Audi are pushing for one. They could improve their offer and give Sainz similar freedoms to those at Williams. If that happens, the pendulum could swing in Hinwil’s favour, making Audi the preferred choice for Carlos Sainz.

As negotiations continue, Sainz will have to weigh his options carefully, considering both the immediate benefits and the long-term prospects of any potential move. Schumacher’s advice, based on his vast experience and insider knowledge, could prove crucial in guiding Sainz towards a decision that maximises his career potential.

MORE F1 NEWS – Alpine Earthquake: Schumacher back in F1?

In a dramatic turn of events at the Monaco Grand Prix, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon will face repercussions following a costly first lap collision with Formula One teammate Pierre Gasly. The incident, which took place at the iconic Portier corner, has not only drawn the ire of team principal Bruno Famin, but has also resulted in a significant penalty for Ocon. This could well be the opening for former F1 driver Mick Schumacher to return to the paddock, this time driving for the Alpine team.

The collision, which sent Ocon’s car into the air and ended his race prematurely, was deemed by the stewards to be the result of an overly ambitious overtaking attempt. As a result, Ocon was handed a 10-second penalty, which translates into a five-place grid drop for the upcoming race in Canada. The stewards’ statement was…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
