Sainz Red Bull return

As the Formula One world turns its attention to the unfolding drama in the Red Bull Racing paddock, speculation about the team’s driver line-up beyond the 2024 season is intensifying. With Max Verstappen’s future shrouded in rumours of an exit and Sergio Pérez’s seat looking increasingly precarious, Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has intriguingly opened the door to the possibility of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz rejoining the team. Indeed Sainz’s victory in Australia last weekend has opened up an intriguing whisper that the Spanish driver had already been in touch with Red Bull seeking a race seat.

In Formula One, team dynamics and driver performance are scrutinised at every turn. For Red Bull Racing, a team that has dominated the sport in recent years, the question of who will drive its cars is a subject of considerable speculation. While Verstappen’s future remains a matter of speculation, the spotlight has increasingly fallen on Sergio Pérez.  The Mexican, whose tenure with Red Bull has been a mixture of triumph and challenge, finds his future with the Austrian team hanging in the balance as the 2024 season approaches.

With Carlos Sainz’s victory in Australia the chief topic of conversation in the paddock, Red Bull boss Christian Horner didn’t rule out the possibility of Sainz returning to the Red Bull fold.

In the beginning…

In 2015, Sainz made his Formula One debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso, a team known for nurturing young talent under the Red Bull Racing umbrella. His first season was marked by flashes of brilliance and the inevitable learning curve that comes with adapting to the demands of F1.

Despite reliability issues and the typical challenges faced by newcomers, Sainz managed to score points in several races, demonstrating his potential to compete at the sport’s highest level.

Over the next two seasons, Sainz cemented his reputation within the F1 community. His ability to extract performance from the car, coupled with his racing intellect, made him a valuable asset to Toro Rosso. In a car that was often seen as midfield, Sainz’s tenacity saw him finish in impressive positions, occasionally challenging the front runners.

Max Verstappen as a team mate

During the 2015 Formula 1 season, Carlos Sainz Jr found himself team-mate to Max Verstappen in Scuderia Toro Rosso, marking a significant chapter in both drivers’ careers. As two of the most promising talents in the sport, their partnership was closely watched by fans and pundits alike. The performance comparison between Sainz and Verstappen was a fascinating tale, with both rookies showing immense talent, competitiveness and potential from the outset.

In terms of performance, Sainz and Verstappen were remarkably close, each showing flashes of brilliance throughout the season. Both drivers faced the challenge of competing in the midfield with a car that was not capable of consistently finishing on the podium.

Despite this, they managed to get the most out of their cars, often battling wheel to wheel not only with each other but also with more experienced drivers. Sainz’s technical ability and aggressive driving style complemented Verstappen’s raw speed and daring overtaking manoeuvres, making it difficult to declare one superior to the other.

Verstappen gets the nod to go to Red Bull

Red Bull Racing’s decision to promote Verstappen to the senior team in 2016 ahead of Sainz was influenced by several factors. Firstly, Verstappen’s standout moments of brilliance, including daring overtakes and remarkable performances in adverse conditions, caught the eye of the team management and the F1 world at large.

That, coupled with a desire to make Verstappen the youngest ever F1 champion as a marketing feather to the cap of Red Bull meant the Dutchman’s allure was too great.

Secondly, Verstappen’s marketability, coupled with his unique story and the hype surrounding his rapid rise in motorsport, made him an attractive choice for Red Bull’s future ambitions.

While Sainz demonstrated comparable ability and potential, the timing and circumstances favoured Verstappen for the promotion. This decision was not a definitive statement on their respective talents, but rather a strategic move by Red Bull Racing in line with its long-term vision. Sainz and Verstappen’s paths have since diverged, with each driver forging his own successful path in the sport. However, their early careers with Toro Rosso remain a testament to their closely matched performances and the fine margins that can dictate the direction of a driver’s career in Formula One.

Moving up the ranks: Exit Red Bull

Sainz’s trajectory took a significant turn towards the end of 2017, when he was loaned to the Renault Sport Formula One team for the remainder of the season, replacing Jolyon Palmer. The move allowed Sainz to showcase his skills in a more competitive environment, where he quickly adapted and delivered strong performances, contributing significantly to the team’s points tally.

The next chapters of Sainz’s career saw him take on new challenges at McLaren and then Ferrari, where his performances only enhanced his reputation. It was at McLaren that he achieved his first podium finish in F1, a testament to his development and ability.

His move to Ferrari in 2021 marked another milestone, positioning him at one of the sport’s most storied and prestigious teams. Here he achieved his first F1 victory with the Scuderia.

Horner’s praise for Sainz: Red Bull return?

With such a storied career behind Sainz, it maybe shouldn’t come as a total surprise the Spaniard was able to win, despite still recovering from surgery, in Melbourne. Indeed, it was in Australia, amidst this whirlwind of speculation, that Christian Horner hinted at a potential seismic shift in the team’s driver line-up.

Notably, Horner stopped short of guaranteeing Pérez a job, instead lavishing praise on Carlos Sainz. The Ferrari driver is the only competitor to have beaten Red Bull on track since mid-November 2022, making him a formidable force in the eyes of many, including Horner himself.

“Sainz to Red Bull?” is a question that suddenly doesn’t seem as far-fetched as it once did. Horner’s comments after the Australian Grand Prix left the door open to such a possibility.

“When you look at that performance, you can’t rule out any possibility,” said Horner, acknowledging Sainz’s exceptional ability on the track.

However, Horner also expressed a desire not to rush into any decisions, citing Pérez’s strong start to the season, including runner-up finishes in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. This balanced approach reflects Red Bull Racing’s careful consideration of its next steps, with Horner insisting that the team is “not desperate” for a new driver at this stage.

Sainz: Red Bull’s potential nemesis turned ally?

Christian Horner makes no secret of his admiration for Carlos Sainz. Describing Sainz as the only driver who has challenged Red Bull’s recent dominance, Horner expressed his respect for the Spaniard’s abilities. Sainz’s imminent departure from Ferrari to make way for Lewis Hamilton adds another layer of intrigue to the speculation surrounding his next move.

The prospect of Sainz joining Red Bull Racing could dramatically alter the landscape of Formula One. With a proven track record and an endorsement from one of the sport’s most respected team principals, Sainz emerges as a compelling candidate to either join or challenge the Red Bull juggernaut in the coming seasons.

As the 2024 Formula One season approaches, the driver market remains fluid, with potential shifts and surprises on the horizon. For Red Bull Racing, the decision on whether to add Carlos Sainz to its line-up or continue with its current line-up has strategic implications.

MORE F1 NEWS: Red Bull turmoil around sacking Daniel Ricciardo

Since Max Verstappen arrived on the scene in Formula One, Red Bull have sacked three drivers mid-season in less than a decade. The world champion himself benefitted from a switch from the then Toro Rosso team to Red Bull in 2016 when Daniil Kvyat was deemed to be underperforming.

Then Pierre Gasly was dropped from racing alongside Max while Alex Albon was promoted after just half a season’s racing in 2019. Ricciardo was to benefit from the latest driver ditched mid-season by the Red Bull Racing organisation, when he stepped in last year after just ten races replacing the unlucky…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
