Insider rumour: Hamilton to hang helmet in 2025

Last Updated on January 30 2024, 3:01 pm

As the 2024 season unfolds, Hamilton, now 39, finds himself at a crucial juncture. He faces not only the relentless march of time, but also the emergence of new, youthful talent within Mercedes, including Italian prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Lewis Hamilton has been a force to be reckoned with ever since he entered Formula One. His decision to join Mercedes in 2013 marked the beginning of an era of dominance that has seen him win six world championships, equalling the record set by the legendary Michael Schumacher. A divisive figure in F1, whatever the opinion happens to be at any given time, his journey is not just one of triumph, but of breaking barriers and redefining what it means to be a champion in the modern era of motorsport on or off the circuit. Hamilton is an icon of the sport.

Chasing an elusive eighth world championship

Hamilton’s quest for an unprecedented eighth world title has been a central narrative of recent seasons. His near-miss at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where he lost the championship on the final lap, was a moment of heartbreak that has since fuelled his determination.

Despite this setback, his resolve remains unwavering, as evidenced by a two-year contract extension with Mercedes, signalling his belief in a potential championship fight in the years leading up to the 2026 technical rule changes.

In an introspective moment, Hamilton shared his complex relationship with the sport with Formule1.nl.

“It’s a love-hate relationship, but sometimes you love it more than other times,” he said. This sentiment captures the essence of a career that has seen exhilarating highs and challenging lows.

Hamilton was reminded of his previous pledge not to race into his forties. Asked whether or not this was still true, he replied: “And that is still possible. I have no set plan for the future. I still feel fit and still enjoy what I do. Meanwhile, I have learned that you should never say ‘never’ in life,

“I never thought that after such a long time in Formula One, I would still feel the same love for the sport,” he explained.

“It is a love-hate relationship though, at some times you love it more than at other times. I do think there will come a time when you will get tired of it. But the love is still there.”

Recent progress and reflective achievements

Since Abu Dhabi, Hamilton’s journey has been marked by a series of podium finishes and a significant pole position in Hungary, a moment that ended a long wait and offered a glimpse of the champion’s undiminished ability. Hamilton has likened this achievement to regaining a lost sense – a metaphor for rediscovering joy in the midst of adversity.

“No matter how much you try to appreciate everything that comes your way; when the going gets tough, when you’ve had difficult times, that’s when you really appreciate it,” continues Hamilton,

“Take the coronavirus time, for instance. Many of us became ill and lost our taste for example for a while. Once recovered, you then appreciate your taste much more. So I think it makes sense that that pole in Hungary felt extra nice, precisely because I had missed it for so long.”

Former confidant to return to help Lewis?

Angela Cullen, a former New Zealand national team hockey player, had been an integral part of Hamilton’s support system as his dedicated performance coach since 2016. Their collaboration, marked by mutual respect and success, came to an unforeseen end in March last year.

The duo announced their separation on social media, leaving fans and observers puzzled, as neither provided explicit reasons for the decision. The abrupt nature of the split, not coinciding with the season’s end, raised eyebrows.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, when probed about the split and its impact on Hamilton, remained cryptic. He described the separation as part of Hamilton’s “honest” self-appraisal and vaguely mentioned Mercedes’ support for Hamilton’s decisions. Wolff’s remarks hinted at underlying complexities in the decision, particularly as he swiftly redirected the conversation to Hamilton’s then-unsigned contract.

Hamilton’s Mental State and Paddock Rumors

The paddock was rife with speculation about Hamilton’s mental state following a dramatic loss of the title in the previous season and Mercedes’ struggles to develop a winning car. Hamilton himself had expressed concerns about his physical regime not being optimal. Additionally, his comments aimed at teammate George Russell, suggesting Russell’s inexperience led to incorrect setup decisions, pointed to a tense atmosphere within the team.

Despite the challenges, Hamilton regained his form during the 2023 season, finishing strongly behind the Red Bull drivers in the title race. However, Russell’s late-season surge, resulting in a tie in their qualifying battles, indicated a shifting dynamic within Mercedes.

Angela Cullen’s Potential Return

Recently, Cullen’s activity has sparked rumors of her return to motorsports. After a period of global travel and adventure, Cullen posted a picture of London’s Tower Bridge on her Instagram, accompanied by an enigmatic caption, fueling speculation about her next move. Hamilton’s heartfelt farewell message to Cullen, acknowledging her significant contribution to his career, only adds to the intrigue surrounding her possible return.

Cullen’s expertise remains in high demand, and her return to Formula 1, possibly reuniting with Hamilton at Mercedes, would not be surprising. Her departure, blessed with goodwill, leaves the door open for a comeback in a familiar or new role within F1. Should Cullen join a different team, it would inevitably raise questions about the real reasons behind her initial departure from Mercedes and Hamilton.

Hamilton’s uncertain future: Retirement rumours

In the midst of this winter break, a strong rumour has emerged from within Mercedes that if Hamilton fails to win a race in 2024, he may consider retiring from F1 for good.

This rumour, unconfirmed but persistent, adds a layer of urgency and poignancy to every race Hamilton competes in this season. Perhaps 2023 is the last roll of the dice for Lewis, who is currently on the longest winless streak of his F1 career. After all, Mercedes should be used to the shock retirements of out-of-contract drivers such as former teammate Nico Rosberg at the end of 2016.

With Red Bull still so far ahead of everyone else, it is likely that even the ‘best of the rest’ will struggle to keep up with the Newey-designed RB monsters from Milton Keynes in 2024. Hamilton is no fool and will know that with the new engine and car rules in place, it will be 2026 before that elusive eighth title becomes a possibility.

Should Cullen return to support Hamilton this year, it may be the last chance for the seven-time champion, despite having another year left on his Mercedes contract, as one has to wonder if he has the same motivation to race hard into his forties as Fernando Alonso.

Mercedes looks to the future: Andrea Kimi Antonelli

While Hamilton reflects on his legacy and his future, Mercedes, under the leadership of Toto Wolff, are looking forward. The team is accelerating the development of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a young Italian driver whose talent and promise have made him a name to watch in motorsport circles. Antonelli, who has shown exceptional ability in the junior categories, represents the next generation of Formula One drivers ready to carry the mantle of racing excellence into the future.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s rise through the junior ranks has been meteoric. His performances have not only caught the eye of team bosses, but also the attention of fans eager to see the next big star of Formula One. With a driving style that combines aggression with precision, Antonelli has the potential to be one of the sport’s elite, making him an integral part of Mercedes’ long-term strategy.

Mercedes junior ‘fast-tracked’ toward F1 seat

Indeed Mercedes are on course to ‘fast-track’ young Antonelli in a move that could put him directly in a Formula 2 seat, missing out F3, perhaps in a bid to ensure the rookie would be available and in the best position possible to step up as Russell’s new team mate at Mercedes.

The 2024 Formula One season is not just another chapter in the sport’s history; it is a defining moment for one of its greatest champions. As Lewis Hamilton navigates this pivotal season, his legacy, the emergence of new talent such as Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the whispers of retirement all come together to create a narrative rich in emotion, excitement and the inevitable passage of time.

  1. The idea that Hamilton can win another title assumes he can win at least one more race and he hasn’t since he passed 300 GP’s. Maybe he will be the first, but after 2 years he still hasn’t won. I bet if he goes winless again that he quits. No way he wants 4 winless years to end his career.
