Alexander Albon, a former Red Bull Racing driver, recently made a striking statement regarding his performance alongside Max Verstappen in comparison to his successor, Sergio Perez, slating the Mexican at Red Bull Racing.
Alexander Albon’s journey in Formula 1, and in particular his time with Red Bull Racing, is a tale of rapid rise, intense challenge and a quest for redemption. Born in London and racing under the Thai flag, Albon began his Formula 1 career with Toro Rosso in 2019. His early performances were promising and showed his potential in a mid-field team.
His ability to extract performance from the car and maintain consistency caught the eye of Red Bull Racing, leading to a mid-season promotion to the senior team, replacing Pierre Gasly.

Step up to Red Bull Racing
Albon’s move to Red Bull Racing for the second half of the 2019 season was a significant step up, placing him alongside one of the sport’s most formidable talents, Max Verstappen. In a high-pressure environment, Albon has shown commendable resilience and adaptability. He finished a respectable fifth in his first race for Red Bull in Belgium, signalling his readiness to compete at the highest level.
The 2020 season, Albon’s first full campaign with Red Bull, was marked by heightened expectations and intense scrutiny. The RB16, Red Bull’s car for the season, was a challenging machine, known for its tricky handling and sensitivity to wind conditions. While Verstappen was able to get the most out of the car, Albon struggled to find the same level of consistency.
Despite flashes of brilliance, such as his podium finishes in Tuscany and Bahrain, Albon’s season was marred by inconsistency and a significant performance gap to his team-mate.

Comparisons and pressure
Inevitably, comparisons were drawn between Albon and Verstappen, with the latter consistently outperforming him in both qualifying and races. The pressure on Albon was immense, not only to support Verstappen in the Constructors’ Championship but also to justify his seat amid growing speculation about his future with the team.
Albon’s tenure at Red Bull reached a turning point at the end of the 2020 season. Despite his potential and moments of excellence, his overall performance fell short of the team’s expectations. Known for their ruthlessness with regard to their junior drivers, Red Bull made the difficult decision to replace Albon with Sergio Perez for the 2021 season.
Albon’s bold Red Bull statement on Perez
Albon believes that his performance during his time at Red Bull was superior to that of Perez in his first year with the team. This assertion invites a detailed analysis not only of the statistics comparing the two drivers, but also of Albon’s potential chances of returning to a top seat in F1.
Albon’s time as Verstappen’s teammate was short and Sergio Perez replaced Albon who then played a pivotal role in Verstappen’s first world championship, particularly in the decisive Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, by holding up Lewis Hamilton.
This raised the question of whether Perez’s contribution in his first year with Red Bull was significantly more impactful than Albon’s.

Albon’s perspective on his performance
Reflecting on his 2020 season with Red Bull, Albon noted on the High Performance podcast that while he often qualified and finished in mid-table positions, the gap between him and Verstappen was smaller than the gap between Verstappen and Perez the following season.
“In the year that I had a difficult time next to Max (2020), he often qualified third and fourth, sometimes even fifth. He often finished the races third or fourth. I was three to four tenths away from him, which quickly put me in eleventh or twelfth position. That was disastrous,” Albon reflected on the High Performance podcast.
Albon suggested that his performance was relatively stronger when viewed in the context of the car’s capabilities in 2020 compared to 2021.
“The following year – and I find it uncomfortable to say this – the car was first or second almost every race. Max and Lewis Hamilton fought for the title. Checo often ran third, fourth or fifth, but the gap between Max and Checo was regularly bigger than it was when I was Max’s teammate.” says Albon.
“Although Perez was my replacement, but my period should not be dismissed as a bad period. Looking at the statistics, I was better than my predecessor and my successor,
“I had those statistics and I didn’t know what to do with them. In the end I handed them out to various F1 team bosses and that’s how the ball started rolling,” says Albon, referring to his return to the F1 grid in 2022 at Williams.

Statistical analysis: Albon vs. Perez
Comparing their performances on identical tracks over the two seasons, the gap between Verstappen and Albon was smaller than that between Verstappen and Perez in several qualifying sessions.
However, Perez did manage to out-qualify Verstappen once in 2021, a feat Albon failed to achieve. Furthermore, while Albon secured two podiums in 2020, Perez surpassed this with five podiums and a win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2021.

The car factor
Albon argues that the Red Bull car was less competitive in 2020 than in 2021, as evidenced by Verstappen’s drastically improved performance and results in the latter year. This factor may have influenced both Albon’s and Perez’s respective performances and standings.
Despite the mixed results and opinions, Albon’s abilities as a driver remain remarkable. His relegation from Red Bull in 2020 was attributed by team officials to a lack of consistency and adaptability in different conditions. However, after spending a year as a test driver and then joining Williams, Albon showed significant mental and technical growth, suggesting his potential for a strong comeback.

The future landscape at Red Bull
With Perez out of contract at the end of the current season and several drivers already committed to other teams, Red Bull may have limited options if they choose not to extend his contract. Albon, with his improved performance at Williams, could emerge as a viable candidate for a return to the top seat.
Alexander Albon’s assertive statement about his tenure at Red Bull compared to Sergio Perez’s performance opens up a debate not only about the nuances of measuring a driver’s success in F1, but also the potential for his return to a leading team. With the dynamics of driver contracts and team strategies constantly evolving, Albon’s future in F1 remains a fascinating topic for fans and insiders alike.
