Wild speculation about Toto Wolff

Is the Mercedes team boss selling his shares? Wild speculation about Toto Wolff is rife now the Formula 1 season for 2023 has ended. Since the investigation into Toto Wolff and his wife Susie on suspicion of divulging Formula One secrets has been dropped, an F1 insider has sparked fresh speculation about the Mercedes team boss: Is Wolff selling his large corporate stake in the German carmaker’s racing team?

Formula 1 has seen massive financial growth in recent years. Part of the reason for this has been the hype generated by the Netflix documentary “Drive to Survive”, which has put the world’s premier motorsport in the public eye.

But when will the peak be reached? When will investors or shareholders be able to sell their shares? Formula One insider Craig Slater recently posed this question on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, bringing in Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, of all people.

Born in Vienna, Austria in 1972, Wolff began his career in finance and investment, but his heart was always with the thrill of racing. He competed in various racing categories, including the Austrian Formula Ford Championship and the German Formula Ford Series, and achieved notable success. However, it was in the field of investment and business strategy that Wolff would truly make his mark.

Motorsport investment

Wolff’s transition from driver to investor in motorsport began with a focus on strategic opportunities in the racing world. His keen business acumen led him to invest in HWA AG, a company closely associated with Mercedes-Benz in the German Touring Car Masters (DTM). His investment and involvement with HWA AG laid the foundations for his future role in Formula One.

Joining Williams & Mercedes

In 2009, Wolff made a significant move when he became a shareholder and executive director of the Williams Formula One team. His tenure at Williams was marked by a minor revival of the team’s fortunes and a return to occasional competitive form.

Toto Wolff’s big break came in 2013, when he joined Mercedes-Benz in Formula One. Initially taking on a dual role as managing director of the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team and shareholder of Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd, Wolff’s impact was immediate. He bought a significant stake in the team, underlining his commitment and belief in its potential.

Taking over from what had been started as a major talent recruitment drive by Ross Brawn, now under Wolff’s leadership, Mercedes became a dominant force in Formula One. He was instrumental in the additional recruitment of key personnel, including assisting Mercedes Niki Lauda for the signing of Lewis Hamilton, which proved to be a masterstroke. Wolff’s management style, a blend of firm leadership and a collaborative approach, fostered a culture of excellence and innovation within the team.

Wolff’s shares within Mercedes

Since the summer of 2021, he has owned at least 33 per cent of the shares in the Mercedes AMG F1 team and is an equal shareholder with Daimler AG and INEOS.

Wolff is said to have paid a total of €50 million for his stake in the team, which was valued at the equivalent of over €3.5 billion by US business magazine Forbes this year.

He was told by several “well-informed insiders” that “some of those responsible within Formula One have watched the value of their team increase and have asked themselves the question: Has the sport peaked? Wouldn’t this be a good time to sell?” explains F1 expert Slater.

Wolff selling up?

The Williams racing team, which was not sold until 2020, is now worth almost a billion, according to Slater’s calculations. The prices are immense. Michael Andretti, who wants to get into F1, is said to have considered buying a team but was put off by the price.

On the other hand, the entry of an eleventh team would reduce the profits of the other participants. Slater speculated that it might be time for Wolff to make a lot of money from the sale before it’s too late.

A decision that may have crossed the Mercedes team boss’s mind this week following the controversial FIA case in which he and his wife Susie have been implicated.
