Lewis Hamilton, the shining star of Mercedes and record Formula One world champion, has opened up about the self-doubt he has faced during a particularly difficult F1 season.
Despite his legendary status, Hamilton’s recent experiences in the sport have left him questioning his own abilities and the performance of his car.

Winless streak leads to introspection
Hamilton’s introspection comes after a second consecutive year without a single win, an unusual situation for a driver of his calibre. His last victory came on 5 December 2021 in Saudi Arabia. In the 2023 season, he finished third in the standings, well behind rival Max Verstappen, who won his third consecutive championship.

The human side of a champion
In a candid interview with the BBC, Hamilton shared his inner turmoil: “When you have difficult seasons like this, there are always moments when you think: ‘Is it me or is it the car? Do you still have it? Is it gone?'”
This admission of vulnerability reflects the human aspect of a champion’s psyche, often obscured by their public persona and success on the track. In fairness to Hamilton, in spite of many aspects of ‘off-track’ behaviour and attitude that could be questioned, he can wear his heart on his sleeve.

Mercedes’ struggles and Red Bull’s dominance
Hamilton’s struggles were compounded by Mercedes’ inability to deliver a car capable of consistently challenging for victories, even after a major mid-season design change. The switch to a concept without side pods brought hope, but not enough to make a significant difference.
Hamilton recalled that he realised the car’s limitations during his first runs in February, setting the tone for a challenging year.

Verstappen’s effortless success
Adding to Hamilton’s frustration is his perception of Verstappen’s seemingly effortless victories.
“You can go through Max’s lap times and some of the data – he was chilling at the front most of the time,” Hamilton remarked.
“I don’t think he’s broken a sweat this year.”
Verstappen told to be more diplomatic
Despite the setbacks, Hamilton is determined to turn things around next season. With the new series less than 100 days away, the pressure is mounting. A veteran of the sport, Hamilton understands the immense effort it takes to compete at the highest level and is ready to rise to the challenge once again.
Lewis Hamilton’s candid reflection on his recent struggles in Formula 1 sheds light on the mental challenges faced by even the most successful drivers.
As he prepares for next season, his determination and resilience are testament to his enduring status as a champion, ready to reclaim his position at the pinnacle of motorsport. Quite how he expects Mercedes to turn around a car now two years off in development compared to the sharp end and bench-mark Red Bull, is anyone’s guess.
