Williams CEO Jost Capito remains convinced that Logan Sargeant will eventually make it to Formula 1, but the German is reluctant to comment on whether he will make it next year, especially as the Formula 2 championship is not yet over.
After an impressive start to his first full season in Formula 2, taking two wins and two more podiums, the Florida native currently sits third in the standings with 119 points heading into the summer break. Sargeant – who is a member of the Williams Academy – is clearly being tipped for a starting berth in F1 and Williams’ CEO says he is confident he will one day join the world’s top 20 drivers in the sport.
“He will be in a Formula One car in the future, I’m absolutely convinced of that. We are obviously impressed, this is his first season in Formula 2. We haven’t put any pressure on him, he has time to develop, he has really impressed us with how quickly he has got to grips with the car,” Jost Capito was quoted as saying by the championship website.
As for a possible Williams Formula One debut, the American driver will need a top-five finish in the Formula Two championship this season to get his super license – a prerequisite for Formula One – as he currently sits third in the championship with four rounds remaining.
But at Williams, although Nicholas Latifi’s future is not yet known (his contract expires this year), the Williams CEO insists it is still a little early to make any decisions about Sargeant’s future.
“It’s quite tricky to make early decisions for a Formula 2 driver until the season is over. So that’s part of the decision making of course. I think we have several options, and we will ultimately go for what we think is best for the team. But it’s too early to get into the details, because we’re not there yet.”
Logan Sargeant will take part in the first free practice for the US Grand Prix scheduled for October at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The test is part of the young driver programme.
