China’s F1 driver Zhou Guanyu was involved in a terrible accident at the start of the 2022 Formula 1 British Grand Prix on Sunday, but fortunately the Alfa Romeo driver escaped without major injury. New shocking footage has since emerged on social media of Zhou’s huge crash at the Silverstone circuit.
At the start of the F1 British Grand Prix, the Alfa Romeo driver who was ninth on the grid, was hit from behind by the Mercedes driven by Britain’s George Russell. His Alfa Romeo immediately took off and landed upside down a few metres further on before sliding (still upside down) to the bottom of the gravel trap at the first corner where it finally ended up against the catch fence behind the Tecpro barriers.
The British Grand Prix was immediately brought to a halt with a red flag to allow rescue workers to come to the aid of the Chinese driver still trapped in the cockpit of his Alfa Romeo chassis.
After being placed on a stretcher, Zhou was transported to the Silverstone circuit’s medical centre where he underwent a number of compulsory tests before being allowed to leave a few minutes later, the doctors had declared him “fit” to return to his garage.

Before the end of the race, which was won by Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, Zhou Guanyu posted a picture of himself on social media with the caption: “I am fine, everything is clear. The Halo saved me today. Thank you all for your kind messages.” said Zhou,
“I want to thank the marshals and the medical team at Silverstone, they were really fantastic,” he added.
“I’m keener than ever to get back on track.”
His Alfa Romeo team added they were “massively thankful to the marshals, response team and doctors for all of their work yesterday.”
“Thanks to the FIA and Formula 1 for all the work they have done, and they keep doing, to improve the safety of our cars,”
