Schumacher dismisses Colton Herta’s F1 hopes as Cadillac face crucial driver decision

Ralf Schumacher has delivered a brutal assessment of Colton Herta’s Formula 1 prospects, questioning why Cadillac would consider the American as a potential replacement for Valtteri Bottas. The former F1 driver believes the team’s search for the right teammate for Sergio Perez should focus elsewhere, even suggesting a McLaren junior as a stronger alternative.

Herta made his Formula 1 weekend debut for Cadillac during Friday’s opening practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix, taking over Perez’s car. However, his appearance has done little to convince Schumacher that he deserves a permanent opportunity in the sport.

Speaking to Sky in Sao Paulo, the German was particularly dismissive when asked about Herta’s chances of securing a full-time Formula 1 seat next season.

“Only if Easter and Christmas fall on the same day,” Schumacher responded.

The comments come amid growing uncertainty surrounding Cadillac’s longer-term driver plans, with Bottas’s position attracting increasing speculation.

Schumacher delivers brutal verdict on Herta’s Formula 1 prospects

Although Cadillac are keen to establish themselves as a competitive American presence in Formula 1, Schumacher believes nationality should not influence decisions about the team’s driver line-up.

The 26-year-old Herta has been working towards a Formula 1 opportunity, but his recent performances in Formula 2 have apparently failed to impress the former Williams, Jordan and Toyota driver.

Schumacher was particularly critical of what he had seen from the American.

“He was really that bad,” Schumacher said when discussing Herta’s recent Formula 2 performances.

“In my opinion, they didn’t deserve that at all.”

The former racing driver also questioned the wider strategy of promoting American talent simply to strengthen Formula 1’s presence in the United States.

“I think it’s nice that they’re trying to push Americans. But it has to make sense, and that has no place in Formula 1.”

His assessment represents a significant warning for Herta, whose route into the championship has been closely associated with Cadillac’s ambitions to develop an American driver.

Cadillac urged to consider McLaren junior Leonardo Fornaroli

Rather than pursuing Herta, Schumacher believes Cadillac should investigate alternative candidates with stronger credentials.

One name he specifically highlighted was Leonardo Fornaroli.

The 21-year-old Italian, who is part of McLaren’s driver development programme, has impressed with his performances in junior single-seater competition.

Schumacher described Fornaroli as “an absolutely strong driver” and suggested he would represent a more convincing option should Cadillac decide to make a change.

It is an interesting recommendation given Cadillac’s need to balance immediate competitiveness with the development of its longer-term driver structure.

The American outfit needs drivers capable of delivering consistent technical feedback while helping the team establish itself against experienced midfield and front-running competitors.

Fornaroli could offer an alternative to the more commercially attractive American route represented by Herta.

However, securing a highly rated junior driver would also depend on McLaren’s willingness to allow him to pursue an opportunity elsewhere.

Bottas uncertainty leaves Cadillac with difficult decision

The immediate question surrounding Cadillac concerns Valtteri Bottas.

Perez’s contract reportedly runs until the end of 2029, giving the Mexican a degree of security as the team continues its development.

Bottas’s longer-term position, however, remains less certain.

The Finn returned to a full-time Formula 1 role with Cadillac after spending time away from the race grid, but speculation about his future has continued.

Herta is not the only alternative being discussed. Former Haas driver Esteban Ocon has also been linked with the American operation, while Mercedes junior Frederik Vesti is another potential candidate.

That leaves Cadillac with several possible directions if it decides a change is necessary.

Schumacher nevertheless admitted that finding the ideal driver to partner Perez is “very, very difficult”.

His comments highlight the challenge facing Cadillac. The team needs experience, speed and consistency, but it must also consider its longer-term ambitions and the commercial importance of its American identity.

For now, Herta’s Friday practice appearance has provided an opportunity to demonstrate his potential. Whether that translates into a permanent Formula 1 opportunity is another matter entirely.

If Schumacher’s assessment is anything to go by, the American has plenty of convincing to do.
