With Audi set to enter Formula One from the 2026 season, a team principal has explained that he believes he knows which team the German brand will partner with. A collaboration that could involve a certain Sebastian Vettel, who is driving for Aston Martin this year.
It was a rumour that had been circulating in the paddock for many months, and which was finally made official a few weeks ago by Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess: Audi and Porsche will appear in Formula 1 from the 2026 season, the year in which new engine regulations come into force. Further, this website published an article earlier this week explaining how the new Audi Formula 1 deal is already done, but not yet reported in mainstream media.
While this is a major comeback for Porsche, which left the ‘pinnicle of motorsport’ in 1991, it will be a major first for Audi, which has never competed in F1. Despite this important announcement at the beginning of May, the conditions of the two German brands’ involvement in the sport has not been specified. Although no information has been officially confirmed, rumours have been circulating that Porsche will work with Red Bull to supply engines to the Austrian team, while Audi is reportedly in the process of buying the legendary McLaren team. However, things could turn out quite differently, according to a leading figure in the world of Formula One.
The director of a Formula 1 team, who preferred to remain anonymous, told German media outlet Blick that he knows which team Audi will partner with. According to him, it will be Sauber, which currently races under the name of Alfa Romeo. Indeed this story corroborates this websites’ article earlier this week. READ MORE ON THIS AUDI STORY
“I don’t understand why Sauber and Audi are still hiding their collaboration,” says the source,
“Audi already bought 25% of the shares some time ago. And a further 50% is to come. It’s a very large amount of money that has been invested,” he said.
But this is not the only story circulating around this deal. Sebastian Vettel, who currently drives for Aston Martin, is said to be on Audi’s radar for a future 100% German collaboration. When asked about this during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, the four-time world champion with Red Bull (from 2010 to 2013) preferred to play it by ear:
“Let’s think about it, how old would I be…? I don’t know, that’s the answer because it’s a long way off. I’m already looking a lot at this year, then next year rather than 2026,
“But I think it’s good news that there is talk of new teams in F1 like Andretti and big manufacturers. F1 seems to be growing in popularity, so who knows what the sport will be like in 2026,” added the former Red Bull and Scuderia Ferrari driver.
While waiting for Audi to arrive in a few years’ time, we will have to keep an eye on the situation of ‘Baby Schumi’, whose contract expires at the end of the season and who has not ruled out the idea of retiring next December, after the last Grand Prix of 2022 in Abu Dhabi.
