Perez: Can beat Max, will Red Bull allow it?

When Sergio Pérez joined Red Bull Racing in 2021, he witnessed Max Verstappen’s first Formula 1 World Championship title. But the Mexican also has ambitions to become F1 champion himself, claiming he is treated fairly at the team and stands equal chance to Max.

After a number of successful seasons at Racing Point, Sergio Pérez joined Red Bull last season. At the Austrian team, the Mexican witnessed Max Verstappen’s first title of his career. Pérez played an important role in that title, helping the Dutchman on the track and putting obstacles in the way of Lewis Hamilton. However, the 32-year-old also has his own ambitions with Red Bull, and they are rather high.

“I feel I have a chance to be champion with Red Bull. I have to prove myself. I know I can do it, I am working for it and I don’t just want to win races, today my goal is to win championships,” says the Mexican,

“It would be disrespectful to myself and my family if I didn’t try to aim for the title. I have the same chances as Max at Red Bull. I don’t need to drive in Formula 1, I’m here because I want to be champion,”

Certainly, it appears that the pairing of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen has been successful for the team as they finished second in the Constructors’ Championship in 2021 and saw Verstappen win the title and whilst Perez’s campaign last year was not as dominant as Verstappen’s, he played a crucial role fending off a charging Lewis Hamilton.

Quite whether the Mexican has got enough speed and consistency to be a champion is, in my view, a stretch. Let alone the obvious bias towards Max within the Red Bull setup. Indeed Red Bull will always favour their Dutch star.

One thing Perez does perhaps prove with his apparent success within the team setup is that the Red Bull junior driver programme has exhausted its supply of quality drivers, the Mexican being brought in from outside Markos jurisdiction.

One must feel for Pierre Gasly.
