The Renault F1 team has confirmed the participation of the double F1 world champion Fernando Alonso during the test day scheduled in Abu Dhabi on December 15th.

Initially planned for young drivers, these tests were originally forbidden for the Spanish driver, but the French manufacturer’s team received authorisation from the FIA on Wednesday.

Renault therefore confirmed today that Guanyu Zhou and Fernando Alonso will take part in the one-day post-season tests at Yas Marina on Tuesday 15th December.

Test driver Zhou and Fernando Alonso will take the wheel of the Renault R.S.20 cars that competed in the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship.

“We would like to thank the FIA and F1 for accepting our test programme in recognition of our commitment to young drivers through promotional formulas and Fernando’s dedication to advancing the careers of young talent. ” said Cyril Abiteboul, the team’s principal team.

“Zhou has had a taste of the benefits of the Renault Sport Academy, which he joined last year.” continues the Renault boss,

“He has worked hard and made a real contribution to the team’s performance through his work on the simulator and the test programme.

“I am delighted that he will be able to take the wheel of the R.S.20 to complete his adventure so far. 

“For Fernando, this will be the next step of his return. He has worked tirelessly to make sure he is as ready as possible for 2021.

“He wants to make a big contribution to the team, but also to the fans and sport that he has missed so much in the last two years. ”
