While he announced his departure from Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel has still not decided for his future in Formula 1 – For its part, Toto Wolff, boss of Mercedes, does not close the door to the quadruple world champion.
Wolff says the Mercedes team will first look at its own drivers for 2021 before considering an outside driver like Sebastian Vettel however.
Of course, many fans are hoping that Mercedes will sign Sebastian Vettel alongside Lewis Hamilton from 2021, and once again, the Mercedes team boss is not ruling out the idea of bringing in the four-time world champion next year.
However, Wolff assures that Mercedes will first and foremost evaluate its own drivers before looking outside the team.
“We want to start the season first and let our two drivers drive freely. ” Toto Wolff explains.
“We want to see how George (Russell, Williams driver) is doing. We want to make that decision over the summer.
“Sebastian is of course a great personality, with four world championship titles. He is one of the most remarkable drivers of his generation. »
“But he’s a foreign candidate for a seat at Mercedes. First and foremost, of course, we are looking at our own Mercedes team. Then, in terms of talent and personality, I probably wouldn’t say no to Sebastian. ”
Toto Wollf also admitted that he was “a little surprised” at Ferrari’s decision to announce Vettel’s departure and the name of his replacement [Carlos Sainz] so early in the season.
“All of this was unusual. The five-year extension with Charles [Leclerc] is relatively long, it’s actually not common, although you have to count him as an exceptional driver of course.
“Somehow we felt that the atmosphere between Sebastian and the team wasn’t so good. But announcing the new driver duo so early before the start of the season is something we wouldn’t do. ”
