Mercedes sees the McLaren F1 team as a real threat in 2020 – The Mercedes team boss believes that the 2020 season will be much more difficult for his team and now sees McLaren as a serious threat.
The McLaren team finished the 2019 season in fourth place in the World Constructors’ Championship and had the strongest growth of any team on the grid last year.
For this new season, where the regulations have not changed, Toto Wolff believes that several teams, including McLaren, will be a real threat to Mercedes.
“We have always taken the view that if the regulations are left untouched, the performances will gradually balance out. “Toto Wolff, the boss of the Mercedes team, explains.
“I think that’s what we have to expect next season and I think it’s fair to say that there are three teams (Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull) that are now capable of fighting for victory, and even for the title if all goes well.
“I also think we should not forget McLaren, which has massively caught up and probably had the strongest growth of all the teams in 2019. I think they will be there.
“So, either I predict a tougher season for Mercedes in 2020 and I don’t think we’re going to see a team achieve 10 or 12 wins – although we’ll obviously try to optimise our weaknesses and continue to perform well. ” says the Austrian.
McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl concurs with Wolff’s assessment on McLaren’s performance. Further, he admits that actually the team has far surpassed the expectations set this time last year at winter testing.
“When I signed for McLaren in November last year, I honestly didn’t expect us to fight for P4 in 2019,”
“Where we were competing this season in the field is very tight which means each race we had to fight incredibly hard for points to climb up in the championship and nothing was secured until the end of the season.
“Given the difficult times the team went through, this season has been an incredible step forward. It gives us a lot of motivation and energy.
“Looking ahead, we have to keep this momentum up and simply have to keep on pushing in order to achieve our ambitious targets.
“At the same time, we should never underestimate what our competitors can do. They all have the same high targets and will work very hard towards them as well.”
