Esteban Ocon’s Formula 1 future is increasingly uncertain after reports claimed that Cadillac have rejected his attempt to secure a seat with the American team. With his Haas contract approaching its end, the Frenchman faces a fight to remain on the grid beyond the current season.
According to GP Blog, Ocon approached Cadillac management around the United States Grand Prix in the hope of securing an opportunity with the expanding team. However, the report suggests that Cadillac’s leadership does not consider the 30-year-old the right candidate to help develop its Formula 1 project.
The reported rejection would represent a significant setback for Ocon, who needs to identify an alternative if he is to avoid losing his place as a full-time Grand Prix driver.
Cadillac’s driver plans remain a subject of speculation, however, and the reported decision should not be treated as an official team announcement.
Cadillac’s driver plans put Bottas under scrutiny
Ocon’s reported approach came amid questions about Valtteri Bottas’s long-term position at Cadillac. The Finn’s future has attracted attention as speculation continues over the team’s preferred driver line-up for the coming seasons.
Bottas and Sergio Pérez bring considerable experience from established Formula 1 operations, but Cadillac’s early competitiveness has been limited by the challenges of building a new team.
The difficulty of evaluating drivers in an uncompetitive car makes any assessment of their performances complicated. Cadillac must balance immediate results against the experience and technical feedback required to establish itself as a serious contender.
Despite the uncertainty, Bottas has reportedly remained part of Cadillac’s plans for 2027. There has been no official confirmation that the team intends to replace him.
TJ13 sources suggest Ocon’s Cadillac hopes may not be over
Despite the reported rejection, Esteban Ocon’s chances of joining Cadillac may not be entirely over. As previously reported by TJ13, information from sources close to the US-based team suggests that neither Valtteri Bottas nor Sergio Pérez is necessarily satisfied with the team’s progress, particularly when compared with the more established operations they previously represented.
Pérez’s position is especially interesting given the TWG-backed team’s reported preference to retain the Mexican driver.
However, that desire may not guarantee his continued presence if concerns over competitiveness and the team’s development trajectory persist. If either driver were to depart, Cadillac could be forced to reconsider its options, potentially reopening a route for Ocon despite the reported setback.
Colton Herta emerges as a potential Cadillac option
One name linked to Cadillac’s longer-term driver strategy is American racer Colton Herta, who has been associated with the project as the team looks to establish a stronger connection with its home market.
Herta participated in a Formula 1 practice session in Austin, providing an opportunity to gain experience in the machinery and demonstrate his progress towards the requirements for an FIA Super Licence.
However, participation in a practice session does not automatically guarantee eligibility to race in Formula 1. Herta would still need to satisfy the applicable Super Licence criteria before making a Grand Prix debut.
An American driver would offer Cadillac an obvious commercial advantage in its home market, but the team must also consider sporting performance, development potential and the demands of competing at the highest level.
Ocon’s Formula 1 career faces an uncertain future
If Ocon cannot secure a seat with another team, a reserve or test-driver position could become his most realistic route to remaining involved in Formula 1.
The Frenchman has considerable experience, including race victories with Alpine, and could offer a team valuable technical feedback. Nevertheless, reserve roles are not equivalent to a guaranteed return to the starting grid.
For now, Ocon’s immediate priority is to establish whether any other teams have an available seat. Cadillac’s reported decision would narrow his options, but it does not confirm that his Formula 1 career is over.
Much will depend on the remaining driver-market decisions and whether another team sees value in his experience. Until the teams involved make official announcements, Ocon’s prospects remain uncertain rather than settled.
