The #F1 Bar Exam: 25 July 2013

Welcome to another week of TheJudge13 Bar Exam. Last week seem to have been a tough one, hopefully this week’s one is a bit easier.

Last week’s question(s): Can you name the drivers in the photo below, the race in which it was taken and who won the race?

The answer(s) I was looking for was: The drivers in the photo is Dan Gurney (Eagle-Climax 2.7 4cyl) and John Love (Cooper-Climax 2.7 4cyl) taken during the South African Grand Prix of 1967.  The two diced for many laps before the American retired.

The race was won by Pedro Rodriguez in a Cooper-Maserati V12. John Love was a Rhodesian (or Zimbabwean) but the South Africans took him as one of their own. Having qualified 5th, Love dropped back down to 10th in the first lap. As other drivers started suffering mechanical failures he slowly made his way to the front of the race, eventually taking the lead after Dennis Hulme in his Brabham-Repco V8 had to make a stop for brake fluid.

As the partisan South African spectators rejoiced to their man leading the Grand Prix and standing a chance for a win Love’s car started sputtering. To enable his car to go the full race distance, Love added two auxiliary fuel tanks however this was not enough and 6 laps from the end he had to make a pit stop for an additional 2 gallons of fuel. This handed the lead to Rodriguez, the only other driver on the same lap. Third was John Surtees and in 4th, a very disapointed Hulme.

Well done to Stephen and Cassius.

This week’s question(s): Can you name the team and engine supplier in the picture below? Can you also name the year and the drivers of the team?
