F1 announces further driver changes for Brazilian GP as six teams reshuffle FP1 line-ups

Formula 1 will feature another series of driver changes during Friday’s opening practice session for the Brazilian Grand Prix, with six teams handing opportunities to young drivers. Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Alpine, Audi and Cadillac are all making changes, while Haas have also confirmed a significant development involving Esteban Ocon.

The Formula 1 grid will look considerably different when the cars take to the track for FP1 at Interlagos on Friday. Following the extensive rotation of drivers at the Mexican Grand Prix, several teams are once again fulfilling their obligations to give inexperienced drivers opportunities in a Grand Prix weekend.

FP1 begins at 4:30pm local time in Brazil (7:30pm UK time), with six teams confirming changes to their usual driver line-ups.

For some of the youngsters involved, the session represents another valuable opportunity to demonstrate their potential. For others, it could prove an important step towards securing a more permanent future in Formula 1.

Ferrari finally give Dino Beganovic his opportunity

Ferrari are among the teams making a change, with Charles Leclerc handing over his car to Dino Beganovic.

The Swede, 22, has been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy for almost seven years and currently competes in Formula 2, where he occupies fifth position in the drivers’ championship.

His appearance comes shortly after Leclerc announced the birth of his daughter, Bianca, on Wednesday.

Ferrari had been the only team among the 11 constructors not to field a rookie during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. Beganovic will now get his opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in the SF-26.

McLaren and Williams continue their rookie programmes

McLaren are also making another change, with Leonardo Fornaroli returning to the cockpit.

The Italian previously replaced Lando Norris in Mexico City. This time, however, he will take over Oscar Piastri’s car, giving the reigning world champion and his team-mate different opportunities to manage their Friday preparations.

Williams are also continuing their development programme by handing Luke Browning another FP1 appearance.

Carlos Sainz will sit out the opening session to allow the British youngster to gain further experience at the highest level of motorsport.

The opportunities underline how important Friday practice sessions have become for teams looking to assess their next generation of drivers.

Alpine, Audi and Cadillac confirm further changes

Alpine will give Gabriele Mini the opportunity to replace Pierre Gasly.

The young Italian is another driver hoping to use the session to strengthen his credentials for a potential future in Formula 1.

Audi have also confirmed that Freddie Slater will take over Nico Hülkenberg’s car.

Cadillac, meanwhile, will once again put Colton Herta behind the wheel. The American will drive Sergio Perez’s car in Brazil, having already received an opportunity to gain experience with the new Formula 1 operation.

Herta’s continued involvement is particularly interesting given his ambitions to establish himself in the sport following his move towards Formula 1.

Haas make a much bigger decision over Esteban Ocon

Away from the rookie appearances, Haas have made one of the most significant driver announcements ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The American team have confirmed that Esteban Ocon will no longer compete as a regular driver for the remainder of the season.

The decision follows an increasingly difficult relationship between the Frenchman and the team, particularly after their confirmed separation at the end of the campaign.

Team principal Ayao Komatsu explained the reasoning behind the move.

“We have informed Esteban Ocon that he will no longer be a regular driver for the team this season. Such decisions – as was the case back in Mexico City – are never made lightly,” Komatsu said.

“However, we remain firmly convinced that this is in the best interest of the team for its continued development. The discussions that took place between the team and Esteban will remain an internal matter. We will continue to respect the confidential nature of such internal processes.”

Haas had already made an unexpected change in Mexico, placing reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa in the car at short notice.

The latest announcement makes clear that the situation has developed further, with Ocon’s departure from the regular line-up brought forward.

With several rookies receiving opportunities and Haas making a major decision about one of its established drivers, Friday’s Brazilian Grand Prix practice session promises to provide plenty of talking points beyond the usual preparations for qualifying.
