Toto on Verstappen joining

Toto drops Verstappen bombshell, decision may already be made – The endless game of musical chairs in the Formula 1 driver market might be about to lose its most tantalising contender. After months of murmurs, whispers and wildly speculative holiday photos, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff appears to have squashed the possibility of a sensational Max Verstappen switch to Brackley in 2026. The Austrian’s latest comments ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix suggest that the reigning world champion will not be making the jump from Red Bull after all – or at least, not anytime soon.

But before we dig into Wolff’s curious blend of clarity and coyness, let’s rewind briefly. Verstappen, a four-time world champion with Red Bull, has been under contract with the team until 2028. However, like all good F1 contracts, there are reportedly performance clauses, get-out options, and loopholes you could drive a Safety Car through.

When Christian Horner was unceremoniously ousted from Red Bull earlier this month, Verstappen’s already tense relationship with the team’s top brass grew more fragile than a front wing in Turn 1.

The suggestion that Verstappen could be lured to Mercedes grew louder by the day, particularly after rumours of a secret Sardinian summit between Wolff and Max began to swirl. The theory went that both men were coincidentally vacationing off the Italian coast, perhaps enjoying Aperol Spritzes while drawing up 2026 strategy on napkins. Now, Wolff has addressed the saga with what passes for a definitive answer in Formula 1 circles.

Dutch GP ‘fake news’

Mercedes set to lock in Russell and Antonelli

Speaking to Austrian broadcaster ORF in the build-up to Spa, Wolff delivered what sounded very much like a confirmation that Verstappen is not heading to Mercedes. “I don’t think there will be any big surprises,” he said, in that wonderfully opaque way F1 team principals have mastered.

A decision on Mercedes’ 2026 lineup is expected to be made imminently, and if Wolff is to be believed, it will involve more familiarity than fireworks.

“The direction we’re going is that we want to continue with George [Russell] and Kimi [Antonelli]. That’s our top priority.”

This is, of course, both expected and slightly eyebrow-raising. Russell has been a solid if unspectacular presence at Mercedes since joining in 2022, with flashes of brilliance and a consistent ability to keep his race engineers entertained. Antonelli, meanwhile, is the teenaged prodigy being fast-tracked through the Mercedes junior programme with all the subtlety of a DRS zone. The Italian has yet to race in Formula 1, but the hype machine is already on full throttle.

Wolff insisted that everyone involved is “up to date” with the plans, suggesting ongoing discussions with both Russell and Antonelli are approaching the final stages. This, of course, leaves little room at the inn for Verstappen.

Alpine quit

No smoke, no fire – just suspiciously aligned vacation spots

Naturally, Wolff couldn’t resist addressing the juiciest rumour of them all: that he and Verstappen held clandestine talks during their overlapping holidays in Sardinia.

“What’s new is that people are making photo collages with airplanes. We’ve never had that before,” he laughed. “Just because you vacation near each other doesn’t mean you’ll work together in Formula 1.”

Of course, Toto. Just like how Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari were “just friends” right up until Lewis turned up in red.

Wolff added that he and Verstappen “have always gotten along well” and that “it just so happens that we also vacation in similar areas.” Because nothing says innocent coincidence like two of the sport’s most influential figures sipping limoncello within ten nautical miles of each other during the height of silly season.

Still room for Max in the long game?

While Toto’s comments seem to rule out a Verstappen defection for 2026, he was careful not to slam the door completely. “You can’t just overlook a top driver like Max,” he noted, acknowledging the reality that Verstappen remains the best pound-for-pound driver on the grid, regardless of what colour overalls he is wearing.

In other words, Mercedes isn’t betting against the possibility of Max becoming available if things truly implode at Red Bull. But for now, the German team seems content with its youth-and-experience package in Russell and Antonelli. And perhaps they believe that Verstappen, for all his talent, may bring as much disruption as he does dominance.

After all, replacing one dominant alpha with another might not be the wisest strategy if you’re trying to build for the new era of regulations in 2026. Not to mention the small matter of Verstappen’s entourage, his personal performance clauses, and whatever kind of seat preference Helmut Marko demands on the team jet.

Red Bull’s Mekies Ushers in a Corporate Coup

A message to Red Bull – or a negotiation tactic?

Of course, we’d be remiss not to wonder whether Wolff’s public support for Antonelli and Russell is just as much a message to Red Bull as it is a statement of intent. Mercedes has shown time and again it knows how to play the long game. By removing the illusion of desperation, Wolff gains leverage in case Verstappen does indeed want to jump ship.

And let’s not forget the political theatre within Red Bull itself. With Horner out and Laurent Mekies awkwardly shuffling into the team principal’s office, Verstappen’s once-stable empire in Milton Keynes is wobbling. Wolff knows this – and might simply be keeping the Dutchman guessing while keeping the Mercedes brand looking united and stable.

So where does this leave us?

In true Formula 1 fashion, Toto Wolff has answered every question while answering none. Verstappen to Mercedes is apparently off the table – but also not out of the question. Russell and Antonelli are the future – unless Verstappen changes his mind. Sardinian beach meetups are harmless coincidences – unless they are not.

The only thing we can be sure of is that the driver market drama isn’t over, and Spa could yet deliver a few more unexpected plot twists.

But now, over to you, the jury. Do you believe Wolff is being genuine about his commitment to Antonelli and Russell? Or is he simply trying to play it cool while Verstappen makes up his mind? Could Max shock us all with a bombshell move in 2026, or will he dig in deeper with Red Bull despite the Horner upheaval?

  1. What if…….
Verstappen stays at Red Bull, but they have to “sell” or get rid of Racing Bulls, like Zak Brown demands? And Horner gets his team ?
