Crazy rumours about Russell & Antonelli – Mercedes Mayhem: Who’s Getting the Boot if Verstappen Arrives? It would not be a proper Formula 1 summer without a healthy dose of wild speculation, contractual chaos and thinly-veiled panic behind the scenes. Yes, the so-called ‘silly season’ is upon us once again, and this year’s top-tier madness has an unmistakable name attached to it — Max Verstappen.
With the four-time world champion reportedly still undecided about his 2026 destination, the sport is bracing itself for a seismic shift. At the epicentre of the potential fallout is none other than Mercedes, the once-untouchable juggernaut now nervously glancing over its shoulder, wondering which of its two current darlings might get tossed out the Brackley back door.
George Russell, a homegrown golden boy with a posh accent and a win or two to his name, is suddenly not so secure. And Kimi Antonelli, the Italian wonderkid with the weight of Toto Wolff’s hopes perched delicately on his teenage shoulders, is also looking nervously at the revolving driver carousel.
So, what exactly is going on in the land of the Silver Arrows? And could either of their current drivers soon find themselves watching from the pit wall as Max Verstappen swaggers in?
When Max Moves, Everything Shifts
The catalyst for this high-octane soap opera is Verstappen, whose apparent frustration with Red Bull’s behind-the-scenes chaos has reignited the rumours of a dramatic switch to Mercedes. With his future reportedly balanced on a 50:50 knife-edge, the Dutchman holds the keys to the entire grid’s reshuffling.
Should he stay put at Red Bull, we may be in for a relatively tame driver market. But if he goes — and especially if he heads to Mercedes — the consequences could be spectacular.
And that’s where the real intrigue begins. Because Mercedes, in their infinite confidence or confusion depending on who you ask, now have two drivers for one hypothetical seat. Which means someone, either Mr Russell or young Master Antonelli, would have to step aside. Temporarily. Permanently. Who knows.
Russell’s Road Map: Brackley or Bust?
George Russell, currently the team’s senior driver by default rather than dominance, has been surprisingly inconsistent this year. While flashes of brilliance remain, a few too many errors and a lack of convincing leadership have opened the door to whispers.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, never one to miss a chance at stirring the pot, claims Russell has as many as three alternative routes mapped out in case Toto Wolff hands Verstappen the keys to his Brackley kingdom.
Red Bull could take Russell as a like-for-like Verstappen replacement — a theory that has enough drama to keep F1 social media in cardiac arrest until Christmas. Alternatively, Russell might wind up at Alpine, who are rumoured to be collecting rejected Mercedes drivers like they’re rare Pokémon cards. And Cadillac, the all-American hopefuls making their 2026 debut, are also reportedly sniffing around the Brit’s availability.
One team not on the list? Aston Martin. Apparently, that ship — captained by the ever-immovable Lance Stroll and his eternally loyal father — has already sailed.
Antonelli’s Alpine Adventure?
And what of the boy prince, Kimi Antonelli? For all the fanfare surrounding his early F1 performances, there’s an inconvenient truth hovering in the garage: he’s not Verstappen. Not yet. And if Verstappen comes knocking, even the most precocious of talents might be asked to sit quietly in the corner for a while.
But fear not. According to Mundo Deportivo, Wolff has a plan. The idea is to loan Antonelli out to another team in the short term — much like a footballer getting shipped off to Girona before rejoining Manchester City. Alpine, once again, emerges as the most likely destination.
There is method in this potential madness. From 2026, Alpine will be using Mercedes power units, meaning Antonelli wouldn’t have to learn an entirely new package. And as luck would have it, Wolff and Alpine’s new puppet master Flavio Briatore are said to be getting on like a house on fire, rekindling their old alliance for some classic transfer market horse trading.
In fact, whispers suggest Alpine may keep Valtteri Bottas in the seat for the rest of 2025, only to swap him out for Antonelli next season once Mercedes needs to unclog its driver jam.
Toto’s Puzzle: No Contracts, No Clarity
For all the digital ink being spilled, it’s worth remembering one important fact — neither George Russell nor Kimi Antonelli currently has a signed contract for 2026. Which means Mercedes, for all its poise and past glories, is wide open to a reshuffle of galactic proportions.
In the meantime, Toto Wolff, the maestro of calm crisis management, continues to play his cards close to his perfectly tailored chest. With Verstappen’s decision expected sometime before the lights go out at Spa or perhaps a dramatic press release in Monza, Mercedes must tread carefully.
Move too soon, and they could alienate a rising star or burn bridges with Russell. Wait too long, and Verstappen might slip through their fingers and into the arms of Ferrari, Audi, or someone else offering him a better set of toys to play with.
A Grid on the Brink of Bedlam
All of this points to one unavoidable truth — the Formula 1 driver market is a ticking time bomb. And Verstappen, without even trying, is holding the detonator.
Mercedes find themselves in the crosshairs of their own success. Do they gamble on a proven world champion with a hint of political baggage, or stick with the talent they’ve been nurturing like bonsai trees for years? And if they do take the plunge, which of their current darlings gets jilted at the alter?
Russell, with his PR-polished charisma and flashes of Hamilton-esque poise, still has plenty of value. Antonelli, with his youth and raw speed, is the closest thing to a long-term Verstappen-style investment. Both could thrive. Both could flounder. And neither has any idea what the next six months will bring.
Until the final domino falls, we’re left in a swirl of speculation, half-truths and manufactured suspense. But one thing is for certain — the Mercedes garage in 2026 is going to look very different to today. The only question is: who gets to wear silver, and who gets shown the silver door?
But what say you, the jury?
If you were Toto Wolff, which way would you go? Keep Russell and risk missing out on Verstappen? Or sacrifice Antonelli’s early momentum to sign the most dominant driver of the modern era? Or is the real madness thinking Verstappen would even join Mercedes in the first place?
