Hamilton’s emotional letter

Hamilton’s farewell letter to Antonelli unveiled, A touching gesture from a champion to his successor – When Mercedes confirmed that teenage prodigy Kimi Antonelli would replace seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in 2025, the announcement was met with both excitement and scepticism. Fans and pundits alike wondered whether the 18-year-old Italian could possibly fill the shoes of one of F1’s all-time greats.

But just a few races into the new season, Antonelli is proving that he’s more than just a bold gamble – he’s settling into life at Mercedes with maturity, composure and growing confidence.

At the heart of this transition, however, lies a deeply personal moment that helped shape Antonelli’s entry into the highest level of motorsport. During the first European race of the 2025 Formula One season at Imola, Antonelli discovered something unexpected in the Mercedes motorhome: a handwritten letter from Lewis Hamilton himself. More than just words, it was a symbolic passing of the torch, and the young rookie was visibly moved.

A personal gesture in a familiar setting

For Formula One followers, the European leg of the calendar brings with it a familiar sight – the return of the large, elaborate team campers that serve as paddock bases across the continent. These mobile buildings, which are packed away for overseas races, are rolled out for traditional venues such as Imola, Silverstone and Spa. For many drivers and crew members, they provide a sense of stability and routine in the high-pressure, ever-changing environment of Formula One.

It was at Imola, in the Mercedes motorhome, that Kimi Antonelli stumbled upon the unexpected. Entering his designated area of the team’s accommodation, he noticed a framed letter carefully placed in his room. The author? None other than the man he had replaced.

“Reading it filled my heart,” Antonelli told reporters during the Imola race weekend.

“I already knew that Lewis had a very human side to him. But this just said so much about him as a person.”

Although Antonelli was deliberately vague about the specific contents of the letter, he did reveal that it contained motivational advice and personal reflections – words that clearly made a deep impression on the young driver. While the letter is now a framed centrepiece in Antonelli’s room, the gesture itself speaks volumes about the quiet, emotional legacy Hamilton has chosen to leave behind.

The story behind the letter: A spontaneous act of emotion

The story behind the letter’s creation adds another layer of poignancy. Mercedes team coordinator Stephen Lord, who was closely involved in the final race weekend of the 2024 season at Monza, recounted the moment Hamilton decided to write the note.

According to Lord, Hamilton had already said goodbye to the team at the end of the Monza Grand Prix – the last time he would be in the Mercedes motorhome as a member of the Silver Arrows. But within minutes of leaving, Hamilton turned around and re-entered the building.

“I didn’t think much of it,” Lord recalls in the Formula 1 Beyond the Grid podcast.

“I thought maybe he had forgotten something. Ten minutes later he came back down. He’d gone upstairs, sat in the room that was going to be Kimi’s and written the letter.”

It was a quiet, solitary moment for a driver who had made the motorhome his second home for over a decade. Lord explained: “The fact that he would never set foot in that room again really moved him.

The handwritten letter was left behind deliberately – not as a public gesture or media stunt, but as a personal message to his successor. And while only three people – Hamilton, Antonelli and Lord – know exactly what was written, the effect is clear: it was both a farewell and a blessing from one of F1’s greatest icons.

Antonelli’s rise and the weight of expectations

For Kimi Antonelli, the road to Formula One was one of relentless progress and overwhelming expectations. Part of the Mercedes junior programme since his karting days, the Bologna-born driver has long been tipped as a future star. His rapid rise through the junior formulas, where he displayed both racing ability and mental composure, led to his surprise promotion to the Mercedes F1 seat in 2025, bypassing Formula 2 altogether.

Following in the footsteps of Hamilton, who not only brought Mercedes multiple championships but also reshaped the team’s identity, was never going to be easy. But Antonelli has handled the transition with remarkable composure. After a modest debut in Bahrain, he has grown in confidence with each race, most recently scoring points in Shanghai and narrowly missing out on a top-five finish at Imola.

But for all the attention on Antonelli’s on-track performance, Hamilton’s letter reveals a quieter, more profound element of his journey – the human connection between two drivers separated by a generation, but united by a shared passion and responsibility.

Hamilton’s Legacy: More than just victories

Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes marked the end of an era. During his tenure, he became the most successful driver in the team’s history, winning six of his seven world championships with the Brackley-based outfit. But beyond the wins, poles and records, Hamilton was also a champion for change within the sport, whether through his push for diversity and inclusion or his efforts to address environmental issues.

This letter, simple as it may be, reflects that same ethos. It wasn’t necessary. It wasn’t part of any formal handover. But it was clearly important for Hamilton to make that final gesture – not just to say goodbye, but to support the young man taking his place.

It’s easy to look at F1 through the lens of competition and machinery. But moments like this remind us that the sport is still driven by human stories – the bonds between drivers, the private emotions that play out away from the roar of the crowd.

Looking ahead: Antonelli’s chapter begins

As Antonelli continues to find his feet in F1, he does so with Hamilton’s words literally behind him. The framed letter serves as both a personal keepsake and a daily source of inspiration – a reminder that while the expectations are immense, he carries the endorsement of a legend.

The rookie has already earned praise for his calm demeanour, mature racing skills and ability to handle pressure. But perhaps most striking is his deep appreciation of the moment he’s living. In a world often defined by ego and bravado, Antonelli’s quiet respect for Hamilton’s gesture – and for the magnitude of the opportunity he’s been given – speaks volumes.

“I’m concentrating on learning as much as I can and growing with the team,” Antonelli said recently.

“There’s still so much ahead of me. But having this letter means a lot. It reminds me that I’m not alone in this.”

As the season progresses and Antonelli continues to develop, the framed letter will remain in his room – part artefact, part inspiration, and a powerful symbol of the link between past and future, between experience and youth, between two very different riders whose stories are now forever linked.

MORE F1 NEWS – New FIA clamp down hurts McLaren’s tyre management

The clock is ticking and with just over a week before the F1 circus rolls into the Iberian peninsula, paddock analysts are sensing a shift in the F1 force. Whilst Max Verstappen failed to claim his fourth pole position of the year in Imola, he did force Oscar Piastri to blink into turn one which was crucial to the outcome of the race.

Its often said its easier to hunt than be the hunted and given how closely matched the McLaren drivers are no one can blame the inexperienced Piastri for playing it safe in Italy last weekend. With his team mate starting in just P4 there was nothing to be gained from challenging Verstappen on the opening lap with the result that both ended up off the track and possibly out of the race.

Max clearly sensed the hesitancy in the McLaren driver and sent it full commitment around the outside of the opening corner with his reward being that he won his second race of the year. Another win for the world champion in Monaco, would mean the championship lead would be cut to either just 15 or 12 points depending on which…READ MORE ON THIS STORY

    • Please give an example, without spouting drivel you’ve read in the Daily Mail about BLM or the great replacement “theory”, of how, where, when and what, Lewis has done to be a “massive racist”
