McLaren 2025 ‘very, very exciting’

Is Papaya making waves? Danner predicts McLaren battle between Norris and Piastri – Every Formula One season brings its fair share of intrigue, but few storylines generate as much anticipation as the internal battles between team-mates. Of all the teams on the grid, McLaren looks set for one of the most intense duels in 2025, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri set to battle it out for supremacy within the papaya-coloured outfit.

F1 expert Christian Danner believes McLaren have learned valuable lessons from last season and will manage this rivalry more effectively. In a discussion with “motorsport-magazin.com” on YouTube, Danner suggested that McLaren’s approach to determining a clear number one driver is different from that of other top teams.

“With the reigning Constructors’ World Champion, it is not the case that McLaren has to immediately recognise who the number one driver is in the team,” Danner explained. “The process of deciding who really has the better cards – Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri – takes a while.

While some teams establish a hierarchy early in the season, McLaren’s internal dynamics suggest a longer period of evaluation before a clear leader emerges. Given how evenly matched Norris and Piastri were in 2024, it’s no surprise that McLaren are taking a patient approach.

Piastri ready to challenge Norris

Danner believes Piastri has what it takes to challenge Norris more aggressively this season. The Australian has shown flashes of brilliance throughout 2024, proving that he is more than just a supporting act to Norris.

“I am pretty sure that Piastri will give Lando Norris a run for his money. We’ll see what McLaren decides then,” commented Danner, highlighting the fact that the team may eventually have to make a crucial decision on who to back in a championship fight.

Tensions between Norris and Piastri flared up on several occasions last season, prompting McLaren to introduce the ‘Papaya Rules’ to prevent on-track incidents between the two drivers. While both remained professional, the competitive fire between them was evident.

This internal battle had an impact on the wider title battle, with some observers arguing that the unresolved number one status within McLaren cost Norris valuable points in his late-season chase of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Has McLaren learned from its 2024 mistakes?

Danner expects McLaren to be more proactive in dealing with this internal rivalry in 2025. He believes the team will make an earlier decision on who to prioritise in the championship fight to avoid the mistakes of last season.

“I think we will decide who the contenders are earlier than 2024,” said Danner. “That was one of the reasons why Lando Norris would not have had a better chance against Verstappen in the end. We certainly learned from that mistake.

This would mark a strategic shift for McLaren. Last season, their reluctance to impose team orders or favor one driver over the other left them exposed at key moments. If they are to mount a serious title challenge, ensuring that their leading driver has full backing at the right time could prove critical.

Norris vs. Piastri: The makings of a heated rivalry

While McLaren will be looking to control the situation, the dynamic between Norris and Piastri could make that difficult. Both drivers have come a long way, with each staking their claim to be the team’s top contender.

“Lando Norris has matured into a personality now, he doesn’t let anyone tell him what to do. But so has Piastri. He has learnt to always give in – not for me,” noted Danner.

This evolution in Piastri’s mentality could make the early stages of the 2025 season particularly fiery. With both riders jostling for position within the team, their rivalry is expected to provide fans with thrilling on-track battles.

“It’s going to be very, very exciting at the beginning of the year when everyone is trying to get into a position where the other guy has to drive for them,” added Danner, setting the scene for a compelling McLaren showdown.

McLaren’s performance in 2024: A sign of things to come?

McLaren’s resurgence in 2024 saw Norris finish second in the Drivers’ Championship with 374 points, while Piastri finished fourth with 292 points. Although neither driver was able to dethrone Verstappen, their performances solidified McLaren’s return to the front of the grid.

With continued improvements to their car and an increasingly competitive line-up, McLaren are expected to be a key player in the 2025 championship battle. However, whether they can manage their internal competition effectively enough to challenge Red Bull remains an open question.

As the season begins, all eyes will be on McLaren to see if they can balance their driver rivalry while maintaining their championship ambitions. Will Norris establish himself as the undisputed number one, or will Piastri upset the hierarchy? Either way, the battle in the Papaya camp promises to be one of the most exciting stories of the upcoming F1 season.

The invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor Russia three years ago today one February 24th 2022, saw Formula One take decisive action with almost immediate effect.
