Bombshell report: Red Bull loses multi-million dollar deal

Red Bull Racing loses multimillion-dollar sponsorship deal at the last minute – A high stakes deal that never materialised Red Bull Racing was on the verge of securing a multi-million dollar sponsorship deal with AI start-up Perplexity, but the deal was abruptly scrapped before it could be finalised. Reports suggest that the decision was influenced by the team’s main sponsor, Oracle, who allegedly stepped in to block the collaboration due to conflicting business interests.

According to a report in The Verge, the deal would have seen Red Bull Racing receive an estimated $5 million per season in exchange for a partnership with Perplexity. The AI company, which has been making waves in the artificial intelligence industry, appeared to have reached an agreement with the Formula 1 powerhouse, only for the deal to be called off at the last minute.

Oracle’s role in blocking the deal

Oracle, a software giant with deep financial ties to Red Bull Racing, is said to have played a crucial role in the deal’s collapse. Internal documents obtained by The Verge suggest that Oracle executives intervened to prevent the partnership from going ahead for strategic business reasons.According to anonymous sources, there were two main reasons Oracle rejected the sponsorship deal:

1. Competition in the AI market – Oracle is reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring TikTok, the globally popular video-sharing platform. However, Perplexity is also involved in a bid for TikTok, making it a direct competitor to Oracle in this high-stakes battle.Given that Oracle has been aggressively expanding its AI and data-driven operations, the company saw Perplexity’s involvement as a direct threat to its ambitions.

2.Ties to OpenAI and the Stargate project – Oracle is also a major investor in OpenAI’s massive Stargate initiative, a project with an estimated value of $500 billion.Perplexity, an AI company, is seen as a competitor in the field. Given Oracle’s interest in the Stargate project, any alliance between Red Bull Racing and Perplexity would have presented a potential conflict of interest. These competition concerns appear to have been the decisive factors in the cancellation of what would have been a lucrative deal for the Red Bull Formula 1 team.

The silence of all parties

As the story unfolds, neither Red Bull Racing, Oracle, nor Perplexity have issued an official statement regarding the failed sponsorship deal. The Verge has contacted all three companies for comment, but none have responded, leaving the situation shrouded in speculation.

Red Bull Racing, one of F1’s most dominant teams, has relied heavily on major sponsorship deals to maintain its competitive edge.

Oracle, which became the team’s title sponsor in 2022, signed a five-year deal worth an estimated $300 million. This makes the software giant one of the team’s most influential backers, and its ability to dictate commercial agreements underlines the weight of its financial contribution.

What it means for Red Bull Racing

The loss of a five million dollar a year deal may not have a significant impact on Red Bull Racing’s overall budget, especially given the massive sponsorship income they already receive. However, the situation highlights the complexities of corporate sponsorship in F1, where business rivalries outside the sport can have a direct impact on partnerships within.

For Perplexity, missing out on a high-profile F1 sponsorship represents a missed opportunity to increase brand awareness on a global scale. Meanwhile, Oracle’s intervention in the matter signals its aggressive stance in the AI and digital market, as it continues to expand its influence beyond software solutions.

As Formula One becomes increasingly reliant on technology-driven sponsors, conflicts of interest such as these may become more common, raising questions about the influence of major backers on a team’s commercial decisions. Whether Red Bull Racing will pursue alternative sponsorships in the AI sector remains to be seen, but for now Oracle’s dominance over the team’s financial dealings appears stronger than ever.

MORE F1 NEWS – Mario Andretti breaks silence on silly F1 politics

The Andretti father and son have kept their silence since  Liberty Media’s F1 operating company (FOM) decided to do a U-Turn on its decision to exclude them from joining the sport. The FIA who regulate F1 had previously given the green light to the Andretti Racing organisation yet a number of the teams had made clear their opposition to an eleventh team.

Of course the issue was all about money as Christian Horner made clear when FOM announced an agreement had been reached over an eleventh team. Surprisingly the F1 bosses appeared to be taken aback around the time of the announcement as the Red Bull boss made clear when asked at the recent Las Vegas Grand Prix

“There’s a lot of rumours going around,” he told Sky F1.“Nobody’s spoken to us about it, but who knows. Obviously, for an American team to come in, I think would be a positive.” …READ MORE ON THIS STORY
