Marko makes Verstappen announcement

Helmut Marko on Max Verstappen’s Red Bull future – In the fast-paced world of Formula One, rumours often spread faster than the cars on the track. Recently, speculation about Max Verstappen’s possible departure from Red Bull Racing hit the headlines.

Questions about his loyalty to the team and the possibility of an early exit have been debated by fans and analysts alike. However, Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, has stepped forward to address these rumours with confidence and clarity.

Verstappen’s contract and early exit speculation

Max Verstappen, now a four-time world champion, is contracted to Red Bull Racing until the end of 2028. However, Red Bull’s decline in the second half of the 2024 season, which saw them lose the constructors’ title, has sparked speculation about Verstappen’s future.

Whispers of a potential early exit clause in his contract added fuel to the fire.

The rumoured clause reportedly allows Verstappen to leave if he is not among the top drivers by the middle of next season. The clause, while unconfirmed, has become a focal point for discussions about Verstappen’s potential exit, with some suggesting that Mercedes, led by Toto Wolff, are positioning themselves as a likely suitor.

Marko’s reassurance: Confident about future with Red Bull

Speaking to *Sport Bild*, Helmut Marko dismissed the rumours with characteristic directness. Asked about the alleged clause and Verstappen’s potential move to Mercedes, Marko made Red Bull’s stance clear:

“I’m not going to comment on the contract, but we’re confident we can give Max a good car,

“Our engineers have good ideas based on the data. We are optimistic,” Marko said.

He also highlighted Verstappen’s loyalty to the team, adding, “Max has a contract with us until the end of 2028 and I know how loyal and grateful he is to Red Bull. That’s why he will be a Red Bull driver in 2026.”

Marko’s confidence wasn’t just limited to Verstappen staying with Red Bull, he also predicted that Verstappen would win a fifth world title in 2025.

Mercedes’ interest and Marko’s dismissive response

Mercedes’ interest in Verstappen has been far from subtle. Toto Wolff, the Silver Arrows’ team principal, has previously hinted at his admiration for Verstappen’s talent. However, Marko was quick to dismiss any notion of Verstappen jumping ship.

“That’s all well and good,” said Marko when asked about Mercedes’ interest.

“But Max has a contract with us until 2028.” Marko’s tone suggested that Red Bull have no reason to worry about losing their star driver, even in the face of potential poaching attempts from their rivals.

The Competitive Landscape of 2025

Looking to the future, Marko offered his thoughts on the teams likely to challenge Red Bull in 2025.

Surprisingly, Mercedes was not one of them. Instead, he pointed to McLaren and Ferrari as Red Bull’s main rivals.

“The two racing teams had the best base for their cars last season and they did well on most tracks. They can build on that,” said Marko.

However, he tempered his assessment with a few words of criticism for both teams’ drivers.

McLaren: A team with potential but lacking driver maturity

McLaren’s resurgence in 2024, led by Lando Norris and rookie sensation Oscar Piastri, was a highlight of the season. But Marko was sceptical about their ability to mount a serious championship challenge.

“Lando Norris showed in 2024 that he doesn’t have the mental capacity to compete in the World Championship,” said Marko bluntly.

As for Piastri, he noted, “Oscar is still too inexperienced.” He also pointed to a dynamic that could hamper McLaren’s chances: “They both take points from each other.”

Ferrari: A strong package with ongoing driver issues

Ferrari were also on Marko’s radar, but he had reservations about their driver line-up. He acknowledged Charles Leclerc’s speed in qualifying, but criticised his consistency in the races.

“Charles Leclerc is good in qualifying but makes a lot of mistakes in the races,” said Marko.

On the other hand, Marko recognised the consistent pace of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, but questioned his ability to maintain that level over a full season.

“Lewis Hamilton still has the speed, but does he have it for a whole season? I have my doubts,” said Marko.

Verstappen against the field: A dominant force

Ultimately, Marko’s confidence in Verstappen’s abilities remains unshaken. Even if Red Bull were to produce a “mediocre” car, Marko believes Verstappen’s skill and determination would still make him the favourite.

“Even if [Ferrari] have a good car and we build Max a mediocre Red Bull, I would put my money on Max,” Marko explained.

That statement underlines the confidence Red Bull have in Verstappen, not just as a driver but as a cornerstone of their Formula One success.

Verstappen’s future at Red Bull is secure

While the 2024 season may have raised questions about Red Bull’s dominance, Marko’s confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back – and Verstappen’s loyalty – leaves little room for doubt.

As Red Bull prepares for the 2025 season, the focus will undoubtedly be on reclaiming their place at the top of Formula One. With Verstappen at the helm and the team determined to deliver a competitive car, the stage is set for another exciting chapter in the partnership between the Dutch superstar and the Milton Keynes-based outfit.
