The 2025 Formula One season promises to be one of the most compelling in recent memory, with a flurry of driver changes and new talent reshaping the grid. Amid the off-track drama, Aston Martin simulator driver Daniel Juncadella has sparked controversy with his comments about Williams driver Alex Albon.
The Spaniard has branded Albon “overrated” and predicted that Carlos Sainz, Albon’s new team-mate, will overshadow him next season.

A revolutionary silly season
The driver market underwent a seismic shift in 2024, starting with Lewis Hamilton’s sensational move from Mercedes to Ferrari. That decision set off a chain reaction of transfers, resulting in ten driver changes and six rookies set to make their full-time debuts in 2025. The reshuffled grid has left fans speculating about which teams have emerged stronger – and which may regret their decisions.
Among the most talked about moves is Carlos Sainz’s departure from Ferrari to join Williams. The Spaniard’s decision has sparked debate, with some questioning whether leaving an historic team like Ferrari for Williams – a team still rebuilding its legacy – is a step backwards. Sainz, however, remains confident in his choice, emphasising the potential he sees in the Grove-based team’s long-term project.
Carlos Sainz’s stellar 2024 season
Sainz joins Williams following his most successful season to date in 2024, in which he claimed two wins, nine podiums and fifth place in the Drivers’ Championship. His performance came despite knowing at the start of the year that he would be leaving Ferrari, proving his resilience under pressure.
While some, such as veteran F1 analyst Peter Windsor, believe Sainz should have opted for a move to Sauber ahead of Audi’s entry in 2026, the Spaniard has defended his decision to join Williams. Sainz insists the team’s upward trajectory is in line with his ambitions, describing the move as “100% not a step backwards”.
Daniel Juncadella slams Alex Albon
Daniel Juncadella, who will be competing against Alex Albon in the DTM in 2021, has delivered a damning assessment of the Thai driver. Speaking on the Duralavita YouTube channel, Juncadella explained that he developed a “negative image” of Albon during their time together in the DTM.
“In 2021, Albon was in the DTM, but it was clear that he didn’t want to be there,” said Juncadella. “He was 100% focused on getting back to F1. Liam Lawson destroyed him that season and it was obvious that Albon wasn’t fully invested in the competition.
Juncadella went on to describe Albon as “overrated” in his opinion, although he admitted he was reluctant to use the term. “I’ve always thought he was overrated, although I don’t like the word. I think Carlos Sainz is going to drive him crazy this year. Sainz is a proven race winner and I think he’ll expose Albon’s limitations.
Albon’s journey with Williams
Since joining Williams in 2022, Albon has been a key figure in the team’s resurgence. He has consistently outperformed teammates Nicholas Latifi and Logan Sargeant, earning praise for his ability to extract performance from underpowered machinery.
However, Albon’s position as the team’s de facto leader was challenged by the arrival of Franco Colapinto, who matched Albon’s pace in 2024. Now, with a teammate of Sainz’s calibre joining Williams, Albon faces the toughest test of his F1 career.
Sainz’s early impact at Williams
Sainz’s move to Williams has already created excitement within the team. At the post-season test in Abu Dhabi he was the second quickest driver, behind former Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. As well as his on-track performance, Sainz’s detailed technical feedback has impressed Williams’ engineers, who have described his arrival as “a blessing”.
Unseen footage from the Abu Dhabi test highlighted Sainz’s meticulous approach, further cementing his reputation as one of the most methodical drivers on the grid. Williams see Sainz’s experience and leadership as transformative, with some insiders speculating that he could quickly establish himself as the team’s number one driver.
A pivotal season for Williams
Williams enters 2025 with renewed optimism, buoyed by the momentum of recent upgrades and the high-profile signing of Sainz. The team believe the Spaniard’s race-winning pedigree and technical acumen could accelerate their push towards the front of the grid.
While Albon has played a crucial role in Williams’ resurgence, Sainz’s arrival raises questions about the team’s internal dynamics. If Juncadella’s prediction comes true and Sainz outperforms Albon, it could mark a significant shift in leadership at Williams.
The road ahead
The Albon-Sainz pairing promises to be one of the most intriguing storylines of 2025. Both drivers have a lot to prove: Albon has to prove he can hold his own against a race-winning teammate, while Sainz has to justify his decision to leave Ferrari for Williams.
For fans, the rivalry provides a fascinating subplot to what is already shaping up to be a historic season. Whether Juncadella’s harsh assessment of Albon is accurate or misplaced, one thing is certain – Williams will be a team to watch in 2025.
