Red Bull admits Ricciardo hidden impact

Racing Bulls junior team Reveal Hidden Ricciardo Impact: The unseen legacy of the Australian driver, Daniel Ricciardo’s departure after the 2024 Singapore GP – Daniel Ricciardo’s second stint with the Racing Bulls (formerly AlphaTauri) came to an end after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.

The Australian driver was released after a period of underwhelming performances, ending a brief chapter that began in mid-2023 when he replaced Nyck de Vries. However, team principal Laurent Mekies has now shed light on the profound impact Ricciardo has had behind the scenes – a legacy that goes far beyond race results.

A new era for the Racing Bulls

The team underwent significant changes in 2024, rebranding from AlphaTauri to Visa Cash App Racing Bulls (VCARB). This marked the start of a new chapter, driven by Mekies and newly appointed CEO Peter Bayer, following the departure of Franz Tost. Under their leadership, the team aims to establish itself as a consistent front-runner in Formula One, with ambitious plans for rapid expansion.

While Ricciardo’s departure may have seemed like a failure to some, Mekies insists that his presence during this transitional period has laid the foundations for future success.

The Ricciardo Effect: More than just lap times

In a candid discussion with the media, including *RacingNews365*, Mekies acknowledged Ricciardo’s struggles to deliver consistent results, but emphasised the invaluable contribution he made to the team’s development.

“Obviously we wanted different results with Daniel,” Mekies admitted. “The fact that he came back and showed flashes of his ultimate speed reminded us of his capabilities. But we failed to consistently unlock that speed together. It’s something that requires a joint effort to hit the sweet spot every weekend, and we didn’t achieve that as often as we needed to.

Despite the challenges, Mekies emphasised Ricciardo’s pivotal role in shaping the team’s future. “When we got it right, Daniel was up there – just look at Miami. But beyond the results, his influence on the growth of the project cannot be overstated.

Building a team for the future

Ricciardo brought with him a wealth of experience from race-winning teams such as Red Bull Racing and Renault (now Alpine), which Mekies believes has been instrumental in the Racing Bulls’ transformation.

“He played a huge role in attracting senior talent and pushing us to be faster,” explains Mekies. “Coming from teams that know how to win, Daniel knew exactly what we needed to build a competitive team. That knowledge was invaluable at this stage of the project.

Ricciardo’s presence is said to have helped the team secure key personnel and refine processes essential to competing at the highest level of Formula One. Mekies credits Ricciardo’s insight and leadership with helping to establish a foundation on which the team can build its ambitions.

The Miami Moment: A glimpse of what might have been

One of the standout moments of Ricciardo’s 2024 campaign came at the Miami Grand Prix, where he displayed the speed and skill that once made him one of the most sought-after drivers in F1.

“It’s performances like Miami that remind you of what he’s capable of,” said Mekies. “When everything clicks, Daniel can deliver exceptional results. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to replicate that level of performance consistently.

That inconsistency ultimately led to Ricciardo’s release, but Mekies is quick to point out that the blame does not lie solely with the driver. “Hands up – half the responsibility is on us. We needed to create an environment where he could be at his best every weekend and we didn’t always do that.”

Lessons learned

The Racing Bulls are now looking ahead, but the lessons learned during Ricciardo’s tenure will remain a cornerstone of their approach going forward.

“Daniel’s time with us wasn’t just about his results on the track,” said Mekies. “It was about the changes he inspired within the team. He set a standard and brought a perspective that will guide us as we continue to evolve.”

A driver’s legacy beyond racing

Ricciardo’s story with the Racing Bulls is a reminder that a driver’s impact on a team can extend far beyond their performance in the car. His ability to attract top talent and provide a roadmap for success underlines the multifaceted role drivers play in shaping the culture and trajectory of a Formula One team.

For Mekies and the Racing Bulls, Ricciardo’s tenure represents a critical chapter in their journey to become a competitive force in the sport.

Looking ahead: Racing Bulls’ ambitious vision

With Ricciardo’s contributions acting as a catalyst, the Racing Bulls are now focusing on their ambitious plans for the future. Mekies and Bayer have outlined a vision for rapid growth, including investment in infrastructure, technology and people.

“Daniel’s influence has given us a clear direction,” concludes Mekies. “Now it’s up to us to build on that foundation and turn our ambitions into reality.”
