Verstappen out of pocket despite 4th title

Why Max Verstappen will earn significantly less in 2024 despite another championship win – Max Verstappen has once again etched his name into the annals of Formula One history. The Dutch racing phenom clinched his fourth consecutive world championship with a stunning victory in Las Vegas, cementing his place among the sport’s all-time greats.Despite this achievement, Verstappen will earn significantly less in 2024 than he did in his record-breaking 2023 season.

The financial disparity is due to a combination of factors, including fewer wins, reduced bonus payouts and a recalibration of earnings metrics, underlining the volatile relationship between sporting success and financial reward in Formula One.

Verstappen joins F1 elite

With his latest championship triumph, Verstappen joins an elite group of drivers who have won four consecutive world championships.

The list includes legends such as Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Juan Manuel Fangio and Lewis Hamilton. This rare feat underlines Verstappen’s dominance on the track and his place as a generational talent in the sport.

But as his trophy cabinet grows, his financial earnings take an unusual dip, highlighting a fascinating paradox in the world of Formula One.

A record-breaking 2023

According to *Forbes*, Verstappen earned a staggering €81 million in 2023, a figure that reflected his unrivalled performance throughout the season. This included 19 wins in 23 races, an unprecedented display of consistency and speed that saw him break numerous records.

Much of that income came from bonuses tied to his race wins and championship performance. Red Bull, Verstappen’s team, has long been known for incentivising its drivers with lucrative bonuses tied to their results on the track.

For each win, Verstappen reportedly earned around €1.5 million on top of his base salary and championship bonuses.

The financial reality in 2024

However, Verstappen’s financial prospects for 2024 paint a different picture. Spanish publication *Marca* estimate that the Dutchman will earn significantly less, largely due to reduced bonus payments.

The publication reports that Verstappen will still receive his standard World Championship bonus of around €5 million, but his prize money from race wins is expected to drop significantly.

The main reason for this is a reduction in the number of wins. While Verstappen dominated in 2023 with 19 wins, he has only managed eight wins so far in 2024, with just two races left in the season. If *Marca’s* calculations are correct, this reduction in wins could result in a €14 million shortfall in bonus payments compared to last year.

What’s behind the drop in wins?

While Verstappen’s skill and Red Bull’s engineering prowess remain unparalleled, several factors have contributed to the reduced win tally in 2024. Rivals such as Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin have made significant strides, closing the performance gap with Red Bull.

In addition, changes to the regulations and the emergence of young talent have added to the competition, making outright dominance harder to achieve.

Despite these challenges, Verstappen’s ability to secure another world championship speaks volumes about his adaptability and consistency. However, in a sport where financial rewards are closely tied to race day results, even the slightest dip in form can have significant economic consequences.

Verstappen still tops the earnings table

Despite this drop in earnings, Verstappen remains the highest paid driver in F1. His projected earnings of €67 million in 2024 still far outstrip those of his closest rival, Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton, who will race for Ferrari in 2024, is expected to earn a base salary of around €55 million. However, his contract reportedly does not include a win bonus, meaning Verstappen’s variable earnings model will ensure he maintains a financial edge.

The disparity highlights the different contractual approaches within the sport. While Red Bull emphasise performance-based incentives, teams such as Ferrari and Mercedes often prefer stable, high-value base salaries. Verstappen’s earning potential therefore remains unrivalled as long as he continues to win races and championships.

Verstappen’s place among the world’s richest athletes

In 2023, Verstappen’s income placed him 17th on the *Forbes* list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, ahead of stars from more mainstream sports such as football and basketball. This remarkable achievement underlines the financial power of Formula 1, a sport that combines global appeal with unparalleled sponsorship opportunities.

It remains to be seen whether Verstappen will maintain or improve his position on the list in 2024. While his diminished earnings may see him drop slightly in the rankings, his continued dominance in F1 ensures his continued relevance both on and off the track.

The wider implications for F1

Verstappen’s financial trajectory provides an interesting lens through which to view the evolving dynamics of Formula One. The sport is increasingly influenced by commercial considerations, with sponsorship deals, race staging fees and media rights playing an ever greater role in determining team and driver earnings.

For Verstappen, the interplay between performance and financial reward is a reminder of the high stakes involved in F1. Success on the track brings not only prestige but also significant financial rewards. Conversely, even minor setbacks can have an outsized financial impact.

Looking ahead to 2024

As Verstappen prepares for the 2024 season, his focus will undoubtedly remain on further cementing his F1 legacy. With four consecutive championships under his belt, he has already achieved more than most drivers do in their entire careers. However, the fiercely competitive nature of the sport ensures there is no room for complacency.

While 2024 may not be a record-breaking financial year for Verstappen, it is unlikely to diminish his stature within the sport.
