Four-time champion in exclusive interview: Sebastian Vettel hints at future plans revealing a return to racing as the German addresses speculation about coming back into motorsport – Sebastian Vettel, four-time Formula One World Champion and one of the most celebrated drivers in the history of the sport, recently gave an exclusive interview with Germany’s RTL about his future plans.

While fans have speculated about a possible return to F1 or a foray into other racing disciplines such as the World Endurance Championship (WEC), Vettel’s comments suggest a more nuanced approach to the next chapter of his career.

For those hoping for a comeback to the F1 grid, Vettel’s comments may come as a disappointment. However, his openness to exploring other racing avenues, including the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, has left motorsport enthusiasts intrigued.

The transition to life after Formula 1

Reflecting on his retirement from F1, Vettel expressed his gratitude for the freedom to choose when and how to end his illustrious career.

“I have been in the fortunate position of being able to choose when to end my career and move on to other things,” he said. While he finds some aspects of this new phase fulfilling, he admits it’s a process of adjustment.

“Sometimes I find [these new pursuits] very fulfilling, sometimes less so. It’s quite normal that it’s a process.”

Vettel’s departure from F1 has been marked by his increasing involvement in environmental and social causes. His decision to retire came as he became more vocal about sustainability and the impact of motorsport on the planet. While he remains a popular figure in F1 circles, his focus has shifted to creating a legacy beyond racing.

A return to Formula 1? Not likely…

When asked directly if he could see himself in a Formula One car again, Vettel was unequivocal.

“Well, I think it’s almost certainly not in F1,” he said. The 37-year-old went on to explain that, while he will get back into a race car in the future, it would not involve the same intensity or demands as his previous F1 career.

Vettel’s decision to step away from the sport appears to be final, at least for now.

“The time with the kids, the bond is different to what it was before,” he said, emphasising his desire to spend more time with his family. Vettel, who will step down from the grid at the end of 2022, has embraced a lifestyle that allows him greater flexibility to focus on causes close to his heart and cherish time with his loved ones.

Despite his retirement, Vettel admitted he still feels a connection to the sport he dominated for years.

“Of course you miss it,” he said, when asked by fans if he missed the adrenaline of F1. But he added: “As an athlete, there comes a point when you have to start the next chapter. It happens to all of us at some point”.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans: Vettel returns

Among the possibilities for Vettel’s next venture is the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is part of the WEC. Known for its gruelling demands and rich history, the endurance classic seems to hold a particular appeal for Vettel. Earlier this year, he was linked with a possible entry, particularly after testing a Porsche hypercar.

While not confirming any immediate plans, Vettel did admit that Le Mans remains a strong possibility.

“It could be, yes,” he said when asked about competing in the iconic race. Endurance racing, according to Vettel, offers a different level of commitment to the rigours of Formula One.

“On the long distance, you can choose your races relatively freely,” he noted, adding that the WEC calendar is far less demanding than the 24-race F1 season.

However, Vettel emphasised that even a relatively light racing schedule requires dedication.

“When I participate, I also have a certain level of ambition and that comes with a certain amount of time,” he said. For Vettel, any return to racing would have to be in line with his values and priorities, particularly his family life.

The German already has strong links with Porsche in the WEC having tested earlier in the year, rumours suggest the German will be imminently returning to racing with the Stuggart marque for the LeMan 24hrs next year.

What the future holds

While Vettel has yet to make any firm commitments about a new chapter in racing, his comments suggest he is carefully weighing up his options.

“Nothing is set in stone at the moment,” he said, leaving the door open to possibilities in 2025 or beyond. Whatever he decides, Vettel is clear that it must be in line with his values and the lifestyle he now cherishes.

The allure of Le Mans and endurance racing remains strong, but Vettel’s cautious approach underlines his desire for balance.

“It’s important that the place and the time are right, that the opportunity is right,” he explained. His comments reflect a maturity and perspective gained over two decades in motorsport, a journey that has taken him to the pinnacle of Formula One.

Vettel’s change of focus

Sebastian Vettel’s latest interview is both a reflection on his storied career and a glimpse of the possibilities that lie ahead. While a Formula 1 comeback appears to be off the table, his potential involvement in events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans has fans excited about what’s next.

For Vettel, the focus is no longer on chasing titles or records, but on pursuing opportunities that align with his passions and principles. Whether he returns to the track or pursues a career outside of racing, one thing is certain: Sebastian Vettel remains a figure to watch, both for his achievements and his thoughtful approach to life after F1.
