Sergio Perez F1 Exit annoucement

Sergio Pérez’s departure from F1 amid family concerns – Sergio Pérez, currently Red Bull Racing’s second driver, is nearing the end of his Formula One career. The Mexican, affectionately known as “Checo”, is facing immense pressure both on and off the track. While his performance has come under scrutiny recently, it is personal matters that could ultimately force him out of the sport.

Rumours of Pérez’s possible departure have been rife and, according to some sources, the driver is leaving F1 altogether, the announcement being given next week during the Mexican Grand Prix. The reason is largely due to concerns over his father’s deteriorating health.

Retirement rumours loom large

What has added to the pressure on Pérez is not just his on-track struggles, but the growing speculation surrounding his future in the sport.

Retirement rumours, while unconfirmed, have intensified as Pérez’s performance slump has deepened. Whether it’s the mounting pressure from within Red Bull, the knowledge that he’s being outperformed by Verstappen, or simply the strain of competing at the highest level for so many years, many are speculating that Pérez decided that retirement from the sport is the most likely decision to be made.

When asked directly about the rumours of a possible retirement announcement after the race in Austin, Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko gave a cryptic answer that did little to quell the speculation.

“He himself says there is no truth in it,” Marko told Sky in an interview after the US Grand Prix, before adding: “We’ll see…”

The ambiguity of Marko’s words has only fuelled further discussion, as his statement was far from a categorical denial.

Pérez’s family crisis: Possible catalyst for his exit

Pérez’s father, Antonio Pérez Garibay, has been hospitalised in recent weeks and his condition has deeply affected his son.

The emotional toll of his father’s health problems, coupled with the intense demands of competing at the highest level of motorsport, seems to be weighing heavily on Pérez. Sources close to the driver suggest that the combination of these factors is causing Pérez to seriously consider stepping away from the sport to which he has devoted so much of his life.

Antonio Pérez Garibay was reportedly found unconscious in the bathroom of his home in Mexico City and was immediately rushed to hospital by emergency services. Initial reports suggested that he had suffered symptoms of a heart attack, possibly brought on by the stress of his son’s high-profile career. While his condition has since stabilised, doctors are keeping him under close observation, in particular monitoring his heart for any further complications.

The health scare has shaken Sergio Pérez, who is said to be struggling with feelings of guilt, believing that the stress of his F1 career and a recent on-track incident may have contributed to his father’s medical emergency.

Did the Baku crash cause Checo’s father’s heart attack?

The incident that has led many to speculate about a link between Pérez’s F1 career and his father’s health took place at the start of the 2023 season, at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Pérez was involved in a high-speed collision with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz towards the end of the race in Baku. Although Pérez escaped without serious injury, the emotional shockwaves of the event seemed to have far-reaching effects.

Pérez’s father, Antonio, later spoke to Mexican media outlet Medio Tempo and revealed that his health problems began after the crash. He explained: “Everything happened after the accident. The shock of the crash could have caused it”. This statement has led to speculation that the stress and emotional strain of watching his son crash may have contributed to his heart condition.

According to an official statement from Antonio’s press office, the elder Pérez was found unconscious at his home and was quickly taken to hospital.

Antonio himself shared his thoughts on the situation while still in hospital, saying, “They’re already checking my heart to see why I fainted.”

In the aftermath of the crash, Sergio Pérez was reportedly devastated by his father’s condition, adding to the internal conflict the driver now faces over his future in the sport.

Family comes first: Could Pérez leave F1?

Family has always been at the centre of Sergio Pérez’s life and career. Known for his close relationship with his parents and siblings, Pérez has often spoken of the support his family has provided throughout his rise to the pinnacle of motorsport. Now it appears that Pérez’s devotion to his family may be taking precedence over his professional ambitions.

The emotional strain of seeing his father in hospital has raised the question: Is Pérez prepared to continue competing in F1, knowing the potential impact it could have on his loved ones? While Pérez has yet to make an official announcement about his future, insiders believe that his father’s health crisis could be the tipping point that sees the Mexican driver step away from the sport.

Pérez’s career: A look back

Sergio Pérez’s career has been one of perseverance, success and resilience. After making his Formula One debut with Sauber in 2011, Pérez quickly established himself as a promising talent. Over the years he has raced for the likes of McLaren, Force India (later Racing Point) and finally Red Bull, where he scored his first race wins and helped the team challenge for championships.

Pérez’s defining characteristic was his ability to make the most of difficult situations. His skill in tyre management, coupled with his aggressive yet calculated driving style, has earned him a reputation as a ‘Sunday driver’ – someone who thrives in race conditions. His victory at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and his performances throughout the 2021 and 2022 seasons, were key highlights of his Red Bull career.

However, Pérez’s time at Red Bull has not been without its challenges. As second driver behind reigning world champion Max Verstappen, Pérez has often been relegated to a supporting role, sparking rumours about his long-term future with the team. While Pérez has remained competitive, the pressure of being in Verstappen’s shadow and the high expectations of Red Bull management have made his position precarious.

Red Bull’s future without Pérez: Who will take his place?

If Pérez does indeed decide to leave F1, it will leave Red Bull with a significant void to fill. The team will need to find a driver capable of backing up Verstappen while also contributing to Red Bull’s pursuit of both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

The most likely candidates to replace Pérez are either Yuki Tsunoda or Liam Lawson, both of whom are part of Red Bull’s Extended Driver Programme. Tsunoda, currently with AlphaTauri, has shown flashes of promise but is still developing as a driver. On the other hand, Lawson, who replaced Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri for the 2023 season, has been praised for his impressive performances in limited opportunities.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko and team principal Christian Horner are said to be keeping their options open as the 2023 season draws to a close. They are in no rush to make a decision and are likely to evaluate the remaining races before finalising their driver line-up for 2024.
