Max Verstappen, the reigning triple world champion and current leader of the 2024 Drivers’ Championship, is going through a turbulent time at Red Bull Racing. Despite his dominant run in recent years, Verstappen’s future with the Austrian outfit appears uncertain, with rumours of a possible move to a rival team circulating around the F1 paddock.
Recent developments, including the departure of renowned designer Adrian Newey from Red Bull, may force Verstappen to re-evaluate his career path and could see him consider new opportunities with Aston Martin or Mercedes. Old rumours yes, but there are once again circulating around the paddock this week since Baku.

Red Bull’s difficult time: Verstappen under pressure
Although Max Verstappen continues to lead the Drivers’ Championship in 2024, he is under increasing pressure from a resurgent competition. Red Bull’s once untouchable dominance on the grid has shown signs of vulnerability.
Verstappen last tasted victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in June 2024, and since then the Dutchman has struggled to find his usual form. This unexpected dip in form has cast doubt on his chances of securing a record-equalling fourth consecutive world championship.
Adding to Verstappen’s woes is the departure of Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s long-time chief technical officer and a genius in Formula One car design. Newey’s move to Aston Martin has sent shockwaves through the sport and heightened speculation over Verstappen’s future at Red Bull.

The Aston Martin temptation: Verstappen’s potential move
The most intriguing rumour surrounding Verstappen’s next career move involves a potential reunion with Adrian Newey at Aston Martin. Newey’s arrival at the Silverstone-based team is seen as a major coup, with many insiders believing that it could propel Aston Martin into the ranks of championship contenders.
According to a report by French news website NextGen-Auto, Aston Martin has offered Verstappen a realistic chance of remaining at the top of the sport by joining the Silverstone outfit and given Newey’s pedigree in designing championship-winning cars, this is increasingly looking like a logical step forward.
At just 26 years of age, Verstappen has many years ahead of him in Formula One and a reunion with Newey could provide the Dutchman with the tools to add to his tally of world titles. Given Newey’s technical acumen and Aston Martin’s growing ambitions, Verstappen could be tempted by the possibility of reuniting with the Briton. As Aston Martin continues to expand its partnership with Honda and secure strong backing from Saudi energy giant Aramco, the team is positioning itself as a potential superpower in the sport.
Mercedes lurking in the shadows: A move for 2026?
While Aston Martin is emerging as the frontrunner for Verstappen’s services, another suitor is looming large in the form of Mercedes. The German powerhouse, which dominated F1 in the 2010s, is reportedly interested in securing Verstappen’s services from 2026. Mercedes, led by team principal Toto Wolff, could see Verstappen as the perfect successor to their current driver line-up and a key to their future success.
Mercedes’ appeal lies in its pedigree and infrastructure. Despite recent challenges, the Brackley-based outfit have retained their elite status and are constantly looking for new ways to return to championship-winning form. For Verstappen, a move to Mercedes could offer long-term stability and another chance at continued success.
However, with his Red Bull contract running until 2028, any move to Mercedes or Aston Martin would require significant negotiations or an early release.

Fernando Alonso’s enthusiasm: The Newey effect
The excitement surrounding Adrian Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin is not limited to Verstappen’s potential move. Fernando Alonso, the two-time World Champion and current Aston Martin driver, has expressed his enthusiasm for working with Newey.
Alonso, who has been instrumental in Aston Martin’s rise to prominence, believes that Newey’s arrival, coupled with the team’s advanced facilities and technological support, will help the team achieve its long-term ambitions.
“Lawrence’s [Stroll] vision is taking shape and with this new building, Adrian’s arrival, Honda engines and the support of Aramco, it is definitely a team for the future,” Alonso said recently.
“For me, it’s an incredible opportunity, both professionally and personally, to work with and learn from someone like Adrian.”
Alonso’s comments underline the excitement within Aston Martin as they position themselves as serious championship contenders in the coming years. Should Verstappen join the Silverstone team after 2025, the prospect of an Alonso-Verstappen partnership would create one of the most formidable line-ups in the sport’s modern era.

Verstappen’s decision looms: What next?
Max Verstappen is at a critical juncture in his career. With the departure of Adrian Newey, Red Bull will be keen to retain their star driver, but the future may seem uncertain without the technical wizardry that has seen Verstappen win three world titles. Aston Martin, on the other hand, offers a tantalising opportunity to continue his dominance alongside a team on the rise.
Meanwhile, Mercedes is a more distant but equally attractive option for Verstappen should the Dutchman seek a new challenge in the future. With these choices looming, the next few months could mark a pivotal chapter in Verstappen’s F1 journey.
As the 2024 season unfolds, the F1 world will be watching closely to see what happens with Verstappen’s future. Will he stay at Red Bull and try to weather the storm? Or will he seize the opportunity to reunite with Adrian Newey and begin a new chapter with Aston Martin? Whatever he decides, the landscape of Formula One could be dramatically altered by Verstappen’s next move.
