Newey gives Verstappen four career options

Verstappen’s career options expand as Adrian Newey joins Aston Martin – In a landmark move, renowned Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey has announced that he will join Aston Martin in 2025, marking a seismic shift in the world of motorsport.

Newey’s decision to leave Red Bull after decades of success opens up new opportunities not only for Aston Martin, but also for Max Verstappen. With Newey’s expertise set to transform Aston Martin into a serious title contender, Verstappen now faces four intriguing career choices for 2026.

The impact of Adrian Newey on Formula 1

Adrian Newey’s legacy in Formula One is unparalleled, having been instrumental in 25 world titles during his time with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull. His involvement in Red Bull’s dominance, including the design of the RB19 that catapulted Verstappen to multiple championships, has been widely praised.

As Newey prepares for a new challenge, his move to Aston Martin could reshape the competitive landscape in 2026 and beyond.

Newey’s decision to join Aston Martin is a bold one, especially given that his move is not motivated by financial gain. While reports suggest that Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s billionaire owner, has offered Newey a staggering annual salary in the region of €25-35 million, it is Newey’s desire to win with a new team that has driven this career-defining decision.

The partnership aims to take the mid-tier team into the elite ranks of Formula One, and Verstappen is now one of the key figures who could benefit from this seismic shift.

Why Newey chose Aston Martin

Aston Martin is a tempting challenge for Newey. The team will use Honda engines from 2026, giving the experienced designer familiarity with the power unit he worked with at Red Bull. It’s likely that through negotiations with Stroll, Newey has had access to detailed information about Honda’s engine performance, ensuring he made an informed choice before committing to Aston Martin.

In addition, Aston Martin’s infrastructure is improving rapidly. The team has recently opened a new factory with a state of the art wind tunnel which will be operational in the coming weeks.

This facility will be a significant advantage as Formula One teams begin development of their 2026 cars, a process that begins in early 2025. In contrast, Red Bull’s outdated wind tunnel could potentially hinder its progress, giving Aston Martin a technological edge at a crucial time.

Another key reason for Newey’s move is the growing strength of Aston Martin’s personnel. Lawrence Stroll has consistently invested in high-calibre talent, including the hiring of Andy Cowell, the engineer responsible for Mercedes’ dominance in the hybrid era. Combining Newey’s aerodynamic expertise with Cowell’s engine knowledge gives Aston Martin a formidable technical base that could take them to the top of the sport.

A dream come true for Alonso and Newey?

At Aston Martin, Newey will work alongside Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, a driver duo with very different career paths. Alonso remains competitive at the age of 43, but questions remain about his longevity in the sport. Newey has long expressed regret at never having worked with the two-time world champion, so this partnership is a long-awaited dream come true for both men.

However, there may be concerns about the Stroll-Alonso partnership. While Alonso continues to perform at a high level, Lance Stroll has yet to prove himself as a potential world champion. As Aston Martin looks to build a team capable of winning titles, Newey may have asked Lance Stroll about his plans for the driver line-up during their negotiations.

The name that will undoubtedly have come up is Max Verstappen.

Verstappen’s career dilemma: four options for 2026

Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin could make the team a very attractive option for Verstappen. Although Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until 2028, recent speculation about his future suggests that he could consider leaving as early as 2026. Verstappen himself has admitted that Red Bull misses Newey’s influence, which could make a reunion with Aston Martin particularly attractive.

Here are the four realistic options for Verstappen in 2026:

  1.  Stay with Red Bull
Verstappen could remain loyal to Red Bull, where he has enjoyed considerable success. However, if Red Bull struggle to adapt to the new regulations, or fail to regain their dominance without Newey, Verstappen could seek new challenges elsewhere.
  2. Join Aston Martin
If Verstappen decides to follow Newey, Aston Martin could offer him a tempting proposition: a reunion with the man behind many of his championship successes, a Honda engine and state-of-the-art facilities. Should Verstappen make the move, it is likely that Lawrence Stroll would be willing to reshuffle the driver line-up, even if it meant his son taking a back seat.
  3. Move to Mercedes
Mercedes have been another rumoured destination for Verstappen, with team principal Toto Wolff previously expressing an interest in securing his services. However, recent signs suggest that Mercedes may have filled their vacancy for the foreseeable future, potentially closing the door on Verstappen until 2026.
  4. Taking a sabbatical
Verstappen has previously hinted that he may not want to stay in F1 for the long term. If he loses interest in the sport or feels unmotivated between now and 2026, a sabbatical could be a viable option. Mika Hakkinen, for example, took a one-year break from F1 only to extend it indefinitely.

Will Verstappen take advantage of Newey’s move?

Verstappen’s future is still up in the air and his decision could depend on how the 2025 season unfolds. With three top teams – Red Bull, Aston Martin and Mercedes – all vying for his signature, the Dutchman is in an enviable position. Should Red Bull falter without Newey’s leadership, or should Aston Martin show significant promise, Verstappen may find it hard to resist the lure of a new challenge alongside his former collaborator.

For now, all eyes will be on Verstappen as he considers his next move. Whether he stays with Red Bull, joins a new team or takes a break from racing altogether, Newey’s move has undoubtedly given Verstappen a number of exciting options to consider for 2026.
