In a recent development, Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff has indicated that Spanish driver Carlos Sainz will not be joining the Mercedes team for the 2025 Formula One season. The announcement comes as Mercedes looks to focus on its future, particularly by developing young talent such as Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
At the end of the 2024 season, Carlos Sainz will leave Scuderia Ferrari to make way for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who will return to Ferrari after leaving Mercedes. This reshuffle has left Sainz looking for a new team for the 2025 season. Despite holding talks with several teams, including Mercedes, his prospects with the Silver Arrows appear bleak.

Mercedes focus on the future
Toto Wolff has insisted that Mercedes are committed to reinventing themselves with a forward-looking strategy. While Sainz brings a wealth of experience to the team, Mercedes are clearly looking to up-and-coming talent. In particular, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been highlighted as a key part of the team’s future plans.
When asked about the possibility of Antonelli being considered for the future of Mercedes, Wolff responded in a way that made it clear that Sainz is not a priority for the team.
“First of all, I think Carlos [Sainz] deserves a place of honour,” Wolff told Sky Sports.
“He has done a fantastic job. But for us, we’re now on a path where we want to reinvent ourselves a little bit and in the future Kimi Antonelli will certainly play a role.”

Fairness in decision-making
Wolff went on to explain the decision-making process, pointing out that fairness to Sainz was also a consideration.
“We haven’t made a decision for next year, but we didn’t want Carlos to have to wait, because he has to make decisions himself and that’s fair. But he’s done a great job,” he added. This statement reflects Wolff’s respect and recognition of Sainz’s abilities, while also highlighting the team’s strategic direction.
The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) recently made significant changes to its regulations that could speed Antonelli’s entry into Formula One. By removing the requirement for a valid driving licence and adjusting the legal age for obtaining a super licence, the FIA has potentially paved the way for younger drivers to make their F1 debut sooner.
These adjustments could facilitate Antonelli’s transition to the top level of motorsport, in line with Mercedes’ long-term vision.
Williams double ‘bombshell’ coming?
Veteran F1 journalist Joe Saward has been vocal in his predictions, claiming that the decision on Williams’ driver line-up has already been made. Saward expects Williams to announce their drivers for next season after the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix, with Carlos Sainz expected to be confirmed for 2025.
The ‘insideri reports suggest that Williams will officially announce Carlos Sainz as their second driver for the 2025 season. This move means that Logan Sargeant could lose his seat early, possibly as early as the second half of this season. Sargeant’s departure from the team has been the subject of speculation for some time, with questions remaining as to whether his exit would be mid-season or at the end of the season.
According to Saward, team boss James Vowles and his colleagues have seen enough and are likely to make an early change.
Possible opportunity for Andrea Kimi Antonelli
Sawards’ prediction also points to a possible opportunity for young Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli. There is speculation that Antonelli could be offered a contract to drive for Williams in the second half of the season.
This move could be in preparation for the 2025 season, when Antonelli could be in line to succeed Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
Saward suggests that this scenario could be extremely beneficial. Firstly, Antonelli would gain valuable F1 experience, and secondly, he would face manageable pressure while driving for Williams. Given that he would be taking over from a driver who has struggled with more accidents than points, expectations of Antonelli would be relatively modest.

Antonelli’s low-pressure entry
Saward believes that Antonelli will be under little pressure to outperform teammate Alexander Albon.
“Nobody would expect him [Antonelli] to dominate Albon, because Albon is a top driver,” commented Saward, stressing that Antonelli’s main focus would be on gaining experience rather than achieving immediate top results. The low-pressure environment at Williams could be the perfect setting for Antonelli to develop his skills before possibly taking on a more competitive role at Mercedes.
Implications for Williams and Mercedes
These developments indicate a significant shift in strategy for both Williams and Mercedes. For Williams, the arrival of Sainz would add an experienced driver to their line-up, potentially boosting their performance.
Meanwhile, the introduction of a young talent such as Antonelli is in line with Mercedes’ vision of investing in the future. By allowing Antonelli to gain experience at Williams, Mercedes are ensuring that their young driver is well prepared for the challenges of a top team.

The road ahead for Sainz and Mercedes
As Carlos Sainz considers his options for the 2025 season, the clear message from Mercedes is that they are focused on building for the future with new talent.
While Sainz’s future remains uncertain for now, Mercedes’ commitment to developing young drivers like Antonelli signals a strategic shift aimed at ensuring long-term success in the highly competitive world of Formula One.

MORE F1 NEWS: Logan Sargeant to be sacked to make way for Kimi Antonelli
Toto Wolff has a pretty big headache as he ponders who he should recruit to replace the outgoing Lewis Hamilton at the end of this year. Ideally the Mercedes boss would have placed their academy driver Kimi Antonelli with a team like Williams for a year, but he is struggling to find a top driver prepared to sign with the silver arrows for just one year.
Antronelli is just 17 years of age until August and recently a mysterious team – not Mercedes claimed Toto Wolff – applied to the FIA to change their regulations which demand a driver must be 18 to compete in F1…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
