Steiner hints at new Mercedes candidate

The latest development in the Formula One landscape is that Mercedes are reportedly considering a driver pairing of George Russell and young Italian prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli for next season.  Despite the rumours, no official confirmation has been made by the Silver Arrows, possibly in order to keep their strategic options open, as suggested by key figures in the sport, including Guenther Steiner.

The FIA’s recent adjustment to the Super Licence regulations, lowering the minimum age to 17, has paved the way for Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s potential entry into Formula One. The change means that the 17-year-old could theoretically make his debut in the premier league as early as this season.

Mercedes appear to be positioning Antonelli for a seat alongside George Russell for the 2025 season at the latest. However, speculation is rife that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff may be considering alternative plans.

FIA adjusts Super Licence rules

In a significant regulatory change, the FIA has amended Article 13.1.2 of Appendix L to allow drivers as young as 17 to qualify for a Super Licence. The revised rule states:

“At the sole discretion of the FIA, a driver who has recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition may be granted a Super Licence at the age of 17”.

This change marks a significant departure from previous restrictions and opens the door for exceptionally talented young drivers to enter Formula One.

Williams and the Antonelli connection

The paddock is abuzz with speculation that this rule change was pushed by Williams, under the influence of Mercedes’ Toto Wolff, in order to fast-track Andrea Kimi Antonelli into F1. Despite this, Williams team principal James Vowles insisted in Montreal that “Williams’ priority is Carlos Sainz”.

This raises the question of why the rule change was necessary, given that Antonelli will be 18 next season, theoretically old enough to replace Logan Sargeant without the need for new regulations.

The changes also affect the criteria for a young driver to be granted a part-time FP1 Super Licence, with 17-year-olds now eligible. This adjustment could allow Williams to introduce Antonelli to FP1 sessions before the August summer break, giving him valuable experience ahead of a potential full-time seat.

This arrangement could also fit in with Williams’ stated aim of securing Sainz for next season, signalling Logan Sargeant’s likely departure and making way for Antonelli.

Williams’ strategic moves

With Vowles publicly targeting Sainz and Alex Albon secured for at least another two years, Sargeant’s position appears precarious.

Observers suggest that if Sargeant’s performance does not improve, he could be replaced before the end of the season, giving Antonelli the opportunity to gain F1 experience. Such a move would also give Toto Wolff the confidence to sign Antonelli for Mercedes in 2025.

Steiner’s speculative interim solution

Speaking on The Red Flags podcast, Günther Steiner suggested that Mercedes could be looking at an interim strategy. His speculation echoes that of former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve, who has previously hinted at similar possibilities.

Steiner suggested that Mercedes could temporarily bring back Valtteri Bottas, an experienced driver familiar with the team’s dynamics.

“Maybe they’ll bring Bottas back for a year and send Kimi to Williams this year, or something like that,” Steiner mused, suggesting that Antonelli could benefit from a less pressured debut year at Williams.

Hamilton “calculated” mind games send “message” to Russell

Bottas: A familiar face at Mercedes

Valtteri Bottas, currently driving for Sauber/Audi, could be looking for new opportunities as his current team prepares for an overhaul. Bottas’ extensive experience with Mercedes, where he has consistently delivered solid performances, could make him a reliable stopgap. This would give Antonelli a year to acclimatise to F1 with Williams, easing his transition to the main Mercedes team.

The Williams factor: Chasing Sainz

However, this potential Mercedes strategy is dependent on developments at Williams. The British team are reportedly in talks with Carlos Sainz, who is weighing up his options between Williams and the forthcoming Audi team. If Sainz opts for Williams, Antonelli’s arrival could be delayed.

Conversely, if Sainz were to join Sauber, Mercedes could proceed with their contingency plans.

Staggering salary: Newey deal

Sergeant’s seat under threat?

Steiner also raised the possibility of Logan Sargeant’s early departure from Williams, which could open up an immediate opportunity for Antonelli. While this scenario is considered less likely, Steiner did not rule it out completely. “First of all, you always try to work with the people you have.

But of course at some point you say enough is enough,” Steiner commented, highlighting the precarious nature of the sergeant’s position, especially after his recent incidents.

A dynamic driver market

The F1 driver market is poised for significant changes, with young talents like Antonelli and seasoned professionals like Bottas at the centre of speculative strategies. Mercedes’ final decision is likely to depend on a number of factors, including developments at Williams and the performance of their current drivers.

As the summer break approaches, the paddock buzz is intensifying, with fans and analysts eagerly awaiting official announcements. The next few months promise to be crucial in shaping the grid for next season, and potentially herald a new era for Mercedes and their driver line-up.

MORE F1 NEWS: Logan Sargeant to be sacked to make way for Kimi Antonelli

Toto Wolff has a pretty big headache as he ponders who he should recruit to replace the outgoing Lewis Hamilton at the end of this year. Ideally the Mercedes boss would have placed their academy driver Kimi Antonelli with a team like Williams for a year, but he is struggling to find a top driver prepared to sign with the silver arrows for just one year.

Antronelli is just 17 years of age until August and recently a mysterious team – not Mercedes claimed Toto Wolff – applied to the FIA to change their regulations which demand a driver must be 18 to compete in F1…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
