F1 Insider: Bottas switch to… ‘almost certain’

The Formula 1 rumour mill is running overtime these days. One driver being heavily linked with other teams is Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas. One F1 insider believes he knows where the Finn will be heading next.

A year before the full takeover by Audi, the upcoming newcomer to F1 will be starting with a new driver pairing. It has not yet been officially confirmed that Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will leave the team after the 2024 season, but there is no longer any doubt in the paddock.

Audi buys Sauber F1

Audi, the renowned German carmaker is set to enter the pinnacle of motorsport with the acquisition of the Sauber F1 Team. The strategic move marks a significant milestone in Audi’s illustrious history and promises to bring a new wave of competition and innovation to Formula One.

Audi’s decision to enter Formula 1 has been met with widespread acclaim and curiosity. The acquisition of the Sauber F1 Team is not just a simple purchase, but a calculated strategy to leverage Audi’s engineering prowess and racing heritage to compete at the highest level. Sauber, a team with a rich history in Formula One, provides Audi with an established platform, complete with experienced personnel, state-of-the-art facilities and a deep understanding of the sport.

The move is in line with Audi’s broader strategy to strengthen its brand presence in global motorsport, a domain traditionally dominated by the likes of Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari. By acquiring Sauber, Audi aims to hit the ground running, bypassing the steep learning curve that new entrants to Formula One typically face.

Audi’s vision and goals

Audi’s entry into Formula One is driven by several key objectives. First and foremost, Audi wants to showcase its technological advances and engineering excellence on a global stage. Formula 1, known for its technological innovation and demanding engineering challenges, provides the perfect platform for Audi to demonstrate its capabilities.

Sustainability is another key aspect of Audi’s vision. With Formula 1’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030, Audi’s participation is in line with its own sustainability goals. Audi plans to use Formula 1 as a test bed to develop and refine sustainable technologies, including hybrid powertrains and synthetic fuels. This focus on sustainability not only aligns with the future direction of the sport, but also enhances Audi’s desire to gain a reputation as an environmentally conscious automaker.

These moves within the paddock have incurred some collateral damage in terms of driver lineups, namely the incumbent pairing of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu.

Hulkenberg hired as a first step to replace Bottas and Zhou

Audi recently announced the signing of Nico Hulkenberg.

Hulkenberg, an experienced driver with a rich history in Formula 1, is expected to bring a wealth of knowledge, skill and resilience to the team. Certainly, the German is seen as a ‘save pair of hands’ within the paddock.

Nico Hulkenberg’s journey in Formula 1 has been marked by impressive performances and resilience. With over a decade of experience in the sport, Hulkenberg has raced for the likes of Williams, Force India, Sauber and Renault. Known for his exceptional qualifying performances and consistent, if unexciting, race pace, Hulkenberg has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable and skilled drivers on the grid.

Career highlights include winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015 and taking pole position at the 2010 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Although he has yet to secure a podium finish in Formula 1, Hulkenberg’s contributions to the teams he has been a part of have been invaluable. His technical feedback and ability to extract performance from the car make him a vital asset to any team. Hulkenberg’s return to a full-time seat with Audi Sauber marks a new chapter in his career, one that promises new opportunities and challenges.

F1 Insider: “Valtteri Bottas will drive for Williams”

As for the current pairing for Sauber, soon to be Audi; in the case of Bottas, at least, it may already be clear what will happen next according to long-time Dutch F1 reporter Jack Plooij. The Dutch journalist told Ziggo Sport at the weekend that he fully expects the Finn to join Williams.

“Guys, write it down: Valtteri Bottas is going to drive for Williams. It’s almost certain,” said Plooij, whose statement was backed up by a video clip that made headlines during Saturday’s qualifying session. It showed Bottas leaving the Williams motorhome.

“He just had a quick chat with the team principal about the final details of his contract,” the insider speculated about the reason for Bottas’ visit.

When asked, the Finn would neither confirm nor deny. Instead, he explained his flying visit to long-time friend and current Williams boss James Vowles: “He’s a good friend of mine. I ran out of coffee in our motorhome, so I had to get some from there.”

Nevertheless, Bottas openly admitted that he was already looking for a new employer.

“When you’re in a free market, you want to look around and see what’s available. It’s a perfectly normal situation,” said the veteran, who could take over from Logan Sargeant at the British outfit.

Williams has not yet officially parted company with the American. But it should be clear by now that the 23-year-old has to go.

MORE F1 NEWS: Vasseur makes it clear Hamilton will not be number one

This weekend in Italy once again shows why Ferrari is unique amongst all the Formula One teams. Firstly they are the only competitor remaining since the inception of the sport back in 1950, but more importantly in their home country they are treated like a national team. If Ferrari wins people go to work on Monday with a smile on their faces, but when they lose the staff canteen becomes a sombre place.

Ferrari is also the most successful team in the history of the sport. With sixteen constructor championships they dominate the field with Williams behind on nine and Mercedes together with McLaren have eight each. Even the currently uber dominant Red Bull Racing has scored just six in the nineteen years since they were revived from the ashes of the…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
