Update: Vettel back in F1?

Sebastian Vettel talks about a possible return to F1. Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel has spoken openly for the first time about a possible return to Formula 1, with the German saying that he would be potentially interested in a return on the sole condition that he was in a competitive single-seater.

Sebastian Vettel hung up his gloves and helmet at the end of 2022, after two complicated seasons with Aston Martin – the last team he drove for in Formula 1. But with more than half the seats available next year, Vettel admitted that a return to the premier class of motorsport could be on the cards.

Sebastian Vettel’s illustrious Formula One career, crowned by four world championships, entered its twilight with his final season with Aston Martin in 2023. This season wasn’t just another chapter in Vettel’s storied journey; it was a reflective period that encapsulated the essence of his contributions to the sport, both on and off the track.

Vettel’s tenure at Aston Martin, a team he joined in the hope of pioneering progress, has seen a mixture of challenges, successes and poignant moments that underline his legacy.

Rising to the challenge

Vettel’s decision to sign for Aston Martin in 2021 was met with mixed reactions. Leaving behind the powerhouse that is Ferrari, he embarked on a journey with a team that, while historic, hadn’t yet claimed its place at the forefront of the modern era of Formula One.

Vettel’s move was driven by a desire for new challenges and to use his experience to build a competitive team. The 2023 season, his last, exemplified this journey – a testament to Vettel’s commitment to pushing boundaries and striving for excellence, even when the odds were stacked against him.

Season highlights and struggles

Throughout the season, Vettel showed flashes of brilliance that reminded fans of his championship-winning form. There were races where he exceeded the capabilities of his AMR23 car and secured points finishes that seemed out of reach.

However, these moments were interspersed with challenges that have become all too familiar to teams outside the top tier – technical issues, strategic missteps and the sheer difficulty of competing against the resource-rich juggernauts of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes.

One of the season’s highlights was a surprise podium finish at a rain-soaked Singapore Grand Prix. Vettel’s mastery of the treacherous conditions demonstrated his undiminished skill and racing ability, earning him accolades and adding a memorable chapter to his final season.

However, such highs were balanced by lows, including races marred by reliability issues, reflecting the uphill battle Aston Martin faced.

Farewell to a champion

Vettel’s farewell tour was greeted with an outpouring of respect and admiration from the F1 community – rivals on the track, teammates and fans alike. His final race was an emotional affair, marked by tributes celebrating not only the end of a remarkable career, but the lasting impact of his character, sportsmanship and advocacy.

Vettel back in F1?

The possibility of Vettel’s return comes at a time when the Formula One grid is set to undergo significant changes, with more than half of the seats potentially up for grabs next year. This reshuffle presents a unique opportunity for Vettel to re-enter the sport, should the right circumstances arise. His condition for a comeback is the availability of a competitive seat, underlining his desire to be in the mix for podiums and wins, rather than just making up the numbers.

“The better the car, the better the team, the more exciting it is to have a chance to succeed,” Sebastian Vettel told Radio X in the UK.

“I follow the sport, I see what’s going on and that [a return] can be attractive and interesting, but it will depend on the whole package because it’s also a big commitment, with all the other things going on outside of the driving activity.”

“To think about it seriously, it would depend a lot on the package. Age-wise, I feel pretty damn young with all the guys still riding and signing big contracts, who have been around for a long time – I think I could be another ten years in this sport! So I’m ahead of them in terms of keeping fit.”

Discussions with Mercedes confirmed

Sebastian Vettel recently admitted that he had held discussions with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, but the German insisted that these were not discussions about a seat, despite Lewis Hamilton leaving the German manufacturer’s team at the end of this year and a seat being available for 2025.

“I had discussions with him, but not really about a seat. We talked about the situation in general,” Vettel told Sky Sports.

“But I’ve also spoken to other [teams], because I keep in touch from time to time. I have a few projects and ideas with F1. We’ll see whether they materialise or not.”

“So I stay in touch, but I don’t know. It will take a few more phone calls and conversations, I suppose, to find out a bit more. But for sure [at Mercedes] is one of the best packages on the grid.”

Big decision considering family commitments

One of the reasons Vettel chose to retire in 2022 was to be able to spend more time with his children. A possible return to F1 would therefore take him back on the road throughout the year and away from his family – the four-time world champion admitting that this would be a factor to take into account.

“It’s a decision I’m taking for myself, but I’m also taking it for my family. The children have already said that they like the situation as it is now.

“So they wouldn’t be too keen on going back, but they said that without asking me, to be honest. Depending on the car, it will obviously be something we discuss together.”

Sebastian Vettel recently tested a Porsche 963 Hypercar at Motorland Aragon in Spain, but again the German has not revealed his plans with the German manufacturer and a possible participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

MORE F1 NEWS – BREAKING: Hulkenberg signs for new team

Little has changed on track at the beginning of the 2024 Formula One season; Max Verstappen is winning the races when his car makes it to the chequered flag and the focus for excitement is again on the chasing pack. Ferrari look the strongest of Red Bull’s pursuers while McLaren appear to now have the edge over Mercedes.

The big excitement has been taking place away from the racing, with Red Bull and the FIA both facing difficult times. The other big news of the season was the bombshell announcement that Lewis Hamilton was leaving his career long sponsor Mercedes for Ferrari  next year.
