Russell comments on Vettel as team mate at Mercedes

Four-time Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel has openly discussed the prospect of a return to the pinnacle of motorsport, citing competitive driving as the key requirement for a comeback. It appears that it is most likely to be Mercedes as the final destination for the German former F1 champ.

After retiring at the end of the 2022 season, ending a storied career marked by remarkable achievements and challenging seasons, most notably his final stint with Aston Martin, Vettel’s thoughts on a potential return to Formula One have captivated the racing community.

A stint with Aston Martin marked by perseverance and passion

Vettel’s last foray with Formula 1 ended with his journey at Aston Martin, a tenure that has been a mixture of perseverance, moments of racing brilliance and advocacy for causes close to his heart.

Despite struggles with the team’s performance, Vettel’s tenure with Aston Martin was characterised by his unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries and contributing to the team’s development. His final season in 2023 epitomised these efforts, demonstrating his dedication to the sport and the legacy he wanted to leave behind.

The possibility of a comeback

As the F1 landscape prepares for significant changes, with numerous seats potentially open, Vettel has entertained the idea of returning to the fray. His main condition for considering such a move revolves around securing a position with a team that can offer a competitive package, emphasising his desire to compete at the highest level rather than just participate.

“The better the car, the better the team, the more exciting it is to have a chance to succeed,” Vettel said in an interview with Radio X in the UK. His continued interest in the sport and his acknowledgement of the appeal of a comeback, albeit under the right circumstances, underline his passion for racing and the competitive spirit that has defined his career.

Dialogue with teams and future plans

Vettel has confirmed that he has had discussions with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, among others, fuelling speculation about his future in the sport. While these discussions have not explicitly focused on securing a seat, they indicate Vettel’s continued engagement with the world of Formula One and his openness to exploring opportunities that meet his criteria for a return.

The decision to potentially return to F1 is not one that Vettel takes lightly, especially when considering the impact on his family life. The balance between professional aspirations and personal commitments remains a crucial factor in his deliberations, underlining the thoughtful approach for which Vettel is renowned.

Sebastian Vettel’s impact on Formula One extends beyond his achievements on the race track. His potential return to F1 not only intrigues fans eager to see him compete again, but also highlights the wider contributions Vettel continues to make to the sport and society.

Certainly, Mercedes are well experienced with catering for external matters around their star drivers, Lewis Hamilton case in point.

As the Formula One community awaits further developments, Sebastian Vettel’s potential comeback remains a topic of intense interest, symbolising the enduring appeal of one of the sport’s most respected figures.

Russell ready to team up with Vettel

Britain’s George Russell has pledged that he would welcome Sebastian Vettel as a team-mate at Mercedes next year should the German driver decide to return to F1.

Sebastian Vettel hinted this week that he would not rule out a return to Formula 1 next season, provided he could get his hands on a car capable of winning, and the four-time world champion has already begun talks with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff and other teams on the grid.

Asked about the prospect of Sebastian Vettel returning to F1, Lewis Hamilton – who will leave Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season – said that the German would be an “incredible option” for Mercedes should he decide to return to the sport.

Russell comments on Vettel

Asked if he would be willing to team up with Sebastian Vettel from next year, George Russell was enthusiastic about the prospect of working alongside the four-time world champion.

“Sebastian is a wonderful person and a four-time world champion. His personality is certainly lacking on the grid and I think it’s important that we have the best twenty drivers in the world competing for wins and championships,” said Russell of Vettel.

“So, as I’ve said before, I’m really happy and open to having anybody as a teammate, you know, whether it’s a world champion or a rookie, it doesn’t change the way I conduct my business. So, as I said, I welcome anyone.”

The Mercedes team is expected to announce the identity of George Russell’s future team-mate from the 2025 season by the end of this summer.
