Ocon to dump Alpine?

Last Updated on March 19 2024, 7:32 am

Ahead of the 2024 Formula One season, French driver Esteban Ocon finds himself at a critical juncture in his career, not only because of the inherent challenges of the sport, but also because of his contractual situation with Alpine and the looming possibility of a seat at Mercedes.

Over the past two years, the Alpine F1 Team has faced a series of challenges and setbacks. These have severely hampered its performance at the pinnacle of motorsport. Despite its rich heritage and ambitions, the French outfit has struggled to keep pace with its rivals, resulting in underwhelming results that have cast a shadow over the team’s prospects.

The team’s struggles have been characterised by a combination of strategic missteps, reliability issues and a car that has often lacked the pace to compete at the front of the grid. This unfortunate mix has not only led to disappointing results, but has also placed immense pressure on its drivers, including Esteban Ocon, to squeeze every ounce of performance out of an uncooperative machine.

The 2024 season in particular has seen the team struggle with its new concept car, which has failed to deliver the desired performance leap, relegating Alpine to the back of the grid in the opening races.

Testing times for Ocon at Alpine Renault

For Esteban Ocon, a driver of significant talent and ambition, the past two seasons have been particularly testing. Ocon, who has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career, including a remarkable victory in Hungary in 2021, has found himself battling in the midfield for the most part, a scenario that is far from ideal for a driver of his ambition.

Given the ongoing challenges and apparent stagnation in Alpine’s performance, it’s understandable that Ocon is considering his future away from the team. With his contract entering its final year and the spectre of another uncompetitive season looming, the lure of securing a seat elsewhere must be increasingly appealing.

For Ocon, the opportunity to join a team that matches his ambitions and provides a platform to consistently challenge for podiums and wins cannot come soon enough. With Alpine struggling to reverse their fortunes, the prospect of a fresh start elsewhere may be too tempting for Ocon to ignore.

2024: A crucial year for Ocon

Esteban Ocon is well aware that the 2024 season has added significance, as it marks the final year of his contract with Alpine. With Mercedes potentially offering him a seat next season, the stakes are high. The recent announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes to join Scuderia Ferrari in 2025 has sparked a flurry of activity in the transfer market, with Ocon among the names being touted as Hamilton’s successor.

Given Ocon’s strong links with Mercedes, including a stint as the team’s reserve driver in 2019 and his career being managed by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, the connection is undeniable.

Ocon admits discussions away from Alpine

Although his primary focus remains on his performance with Alpine in 2024, Ocon admits he is in discussions about his future, most likely with Mercedes but possibly with other teams as well. He stresses the importance of every F1 season, but acknowledges the unique significance of this year in his career, and is keen to leave no room for regret as he contemplates the hard work ahead, both on and off the track.

“Every year is important in Formula 1, it’s a political answer, but it’s reality,” says Ocon,

“You always have to be as good as the last race, that’s what they say in Formula 1,” Ocon told the High Performance podcast.

“But yes, it’s an important year in my career for sure, and I want to do my best, I don’t want to have any regrets at the end of the year.”

“It’s going to be a lot of work, and off the track, there are obviously going to be discussions because I’m in the last year of my contract. I’m already in discussions, things have already started, but it’s the same for everyone.”

The importance of career discussions

In terms of the ongoing discussions about his future, Ocon feels better positioned than he was in 2019. Since then, he has achieved notable milestones, including a victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, multiple podium finishes and a wealth of experience with over 135 Grand Prix starts.

While not a fan of contract negotiations, Ocon recognises that his achievements and increased understanding of the sport have given him a stronger negotiating position.

“I’m not a big fan of these discussions, but I’ve arrived at a different time in relation to 2019. I know a lot more about the sport, I’ve contested a lot more races, I’m a race winner [in Hungary in 2021], I’ve been on the podium [three times].” added Esteban Ocon.

Emphasising the primacy of on-track performance over the politics of contract talks, he hopes his achievements and potential will speak for themselves. But as the 2024 season progresses, with Ocon failing to score points in the first two races, the pressure is mounting, making his future endeavours in the sport all the more important.

“There are more arguments in my favour, but the most important thing is the work you do on the track, and I believe in that. I think the political side is secondary and I hope it stays that way.” concludes the French driver.

A season of opportunities and challenges

Esteban Ocon’s journey through the 2024 Formula One season isn’t just about navigating the high-speed corners of the world’s premier circuits, it’s also about steering his career towards continued success and growth. With potential opportunities on the horizon and the challenge of proving his worth on track, Ocon’s path forward in F1 will be closely watched by fans and teams alike. Certainly it is now increasingly difficult to say that staying at Alpine Renault is really a seat worthy of any podium finisher and race winner, team mate Pierre Gasly included.

As he balances his commitment to Alpine with the prospect of a future elsewhere in the sport, the decisions he makes during this critical year could determine the trajectory of his racing career. A story to watch unfold.

MORE F1 NEWS:  Jos Verstappen U-Turn on his Horner accusations

The Red Bull saga dominated pre-season testing but it looked as though the organisation had wrapped up the matter before the Bahrain Grand Prix. Having concluded an investigation into an accusation against Christian Horner and dismissing the complaint, the matter reared its head as an anonymous email dropped into 149 inboxes of senior paddock F1 folk.

The email contained alleged documents from the investigation which appeared to cast the Red Bull team boss in a poor light. The Austrian based company is now conducting another internal investigation to find the source of the…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
