Perez twist as F1 star tied into “Red Bull ready” switchover

Despite having a contract with Red Bull until the 2024 season, Sergio Perez is under intense pressure as the team could consider replacing him mid-season if he fails to live up to expectations.

Perez, who finished second in the championship, has been underwhelming compared to teammate Max Verstappen, who has dominated the season.

Perez struggles

In the 2023 Formula One season, Sergio Perez faced significant challenges as Max Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull Racing. Despite finishing second in the championship, Perez’s performance was overshadowed by Verstappen’s dominance throughout the year.

While Verstappen clinched the title with a record-breaking 19 Grand Prix wins, Perez’s contributions paled in comparison, scoring a fraction of Verstappen’s points total. The disparity was not only reflected in the points, but also in on-track performance, with Verstappen consistently outperforming Perez in both qualifying and race conditions.

Red Bull concern

Perez’s struggles were multifaceted and became a point of concern within the Red Bull team. While he showed flashes of brilliance, including two wins, his inability to consistently match Verstappen’s pace and contribute equally to the team’s strategy raised questions about his role and future with the team. His challenges were compounded by a number of strategic missteps and errors, which often left him behind at critical moments of the race.

Perez mid-season switch considered?

The stark contrast in performance between the two teammates led to speculation of possible mid-season changes within Red Bull, as the team sought to maintain its competitive edge and continue its dominance in the sport. Perez’s situation in 2023 highlighted the difficulties of being a teammate to a driver as dominant as Verstappen, especially in a team with championship aspirations.

Potential switch for Lawson

Amidst this uncertainty, Karun Chandhok, a well-known pundit and former F1 driver, speculates that Liam Lawson, a promising talent from New Zealand, could turn down any off-season approaches from Williams. Lawson, who made a remarkable F1 debut as a replacement for the injured Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri, impressed in his limited appearances but was not given a full-time race seat for 2024.

Instead, he will serve as an official reserve driver for both Red Bull and AlphaTauri, now rebranded ‘Charging Bulls’.

The Williams scenario

Williams, who are yet to confirm their final driver for next season, could see Lawson as a potential candidate. However, Chandhok believes that given Red Bull’s history of mid-season driver changes, Lawson may be banking on a potential vacancy at either Red Bull or AlphaTauri.

Further, Williams has other options should they decide Sargeant won’t be taking their race seat in 2024.

Perez’s replacement and Lawson’s chance

Should Red Bull decide to replace Perez due to his lacklustre performance, the most likely scenario would see Ricciardo move to Red Bull, opening up a seat at AlphaTauri. This potential move could provide an opportunity for Lawson to secure a full-time race seat.

Chandhok shared his insights on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, suggesting that Lawson may be eyeing up this possibility rather than committing to another team such as Williams.

Williams’ likely decision

Meanwhile, Williams team principal James Vowles has recently expressed his satisfaction with Logan Sargeant’s progress, suggesting that Sargeant is likely to retain his seat. Vowles is carefully reviewing the data before making a final announcement, which is expected in the coming weeks.

Bottom line

Sergio Perez’s position at Red Bull continues to be the subject of speculation, with the team considering changes based on performance. Liam Lawson, a reserve driver with potential, faces a critical decision: whether to stay within the Red Bull family in the hope of a future opportunity or seek a guaranteed race seat with another team such as Williams.

The dynamics within Red Bull and the decisions made in the coming weeks will have a major impact on the 2024 F1 grid and the careers of several promising drivers. Standard form for the team known for brutally culling drivers at a moment’s notice.
