Formula 1 insider says Red Bull is facing a huge “loss”

The resignation of AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost marks a significant turning point for the Red Bull Formula One team, according to former F1 driver Timo Glock.

The departure of the experienced team principal, known for his straightforward approach, is expected to leave a void not only in F1 but also within the Red Bull racing family.

An integral part of the Red Bull racing dynasty, Franz Tost has long stood as a silent sentinel, guarding the gates through which Formula One’s brightest young stars have passed. As Team Principal of AlphaTauri, formerly Toro Rosso, Tost’s tenure has been characterised by a no-nonsense approach and an unwavering commitment to nurturing emerging talent.

His departure marks the end of an era for Red Bull’s sister team, leaving a legacy that will be revered around the paddock.

The mentorship of champions

Since taking the helm in 2005, Tost has been at the forefront of guiding rookies into the demanding world of Formula One. Under his watchful eye, AlphaTauri, a Red Bull Racing proving ground, has cultivated drivers who have gone on to achieve remarkable success. The list is long and includes world champions and Grand Prix winners such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, all of whom have flourished under Tost’s tutelage.

Tost’s philosophy has always been clear: to create a competitive and challenging environment where only the best can thrive. His approach wasn’t about coddling; it was about preparing drivers for the cut-throat nature of Formula One racing.

This rigorous grooming has ensured that those who have graduated from AlphaTauri are not just participants in the sport, but formidable competitors.

Successes and challenges

Under Tost’s leadership, the team enjoyed notable successes, including Vettel’s historic victory at Monza in 2008, when he became the youngest driver ever to win a Formula One race.

But Tost’s tenure wasn’t without its challenges. The constant pressure to perform in a sport where the stakes are incredibly high meant that Tost had to make tough decisions, balancing the development of young drivers with the relentless pursuit of results on the track.

A no-nonsense approach

Known for his straightforward approach, Tost was never afraid to speak his mind. His frank assessments of performance and strategic decisions were a hallmark of his management style. This forthrightness, though sometimes harsh, was based on a desire to push his team and drivers to their full potential.

As Tost steps down, he leaves behind a team that has become synonymous with driver development. His influence on the careers of many drivers is indelible, and his contribution to Red Bull’s broader racing strategy is invaluable. The departure is a poignant moment for those who have worked closely with him, as they bid farewell to a figure who has been as much a part of the team’s identity as the cars themselves.

F1 insider: Huge loss for Red Bull

In his latest column for Sky, Glock pays tribute to Tost’s contributions, highlighting his role in developing young talent.

“Tost’s directness will be missed in F1. His work with the juniors, where he developed many young and very good drivers, including names like Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, is a loss for Red Bull, for Formula One and for us,” said Glock.

Glock observed Tost’s usual calm demeanour, but noticed a change in his emotions as the race approached, suggesting that the impact of his departure was beginning to be felt.

The AlphaTauri leader’s stoic facade cracked after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when he openly criticised his team’s strategy. Tost’s frustration was evident as he lamented the decision to limit Yuki Tsunoda to a single pit stop, a move he felt cost the team a better finish.

“We screwed up because the technicians, despite spending hours in front of the computer, couldn’t come up with a strategy that worked,” Tost said after the race.

Glock echoed Tost’s criticism, agreeing that AlphaTauri could have benefited from a more astute strategic play with Tsunoda.

“They could have achieved so much more in Abu Dhabi if they had been smarter with their strategy. It was an unnecessary fumble,” Glock reflected.

The future for AlphaTauri

The void left by Tost’s departure will be felt in the coming seasons. It is now up to his successor to continue the work of developing future racing stars, while maintaining the competitive edge that Tost was so passionate about. For Red Bull, ensuring a seamless transition is paramount as the sister team plays a crucial role in their long-term Formula One strategy.

Max Verstappen completed the most dominant performance seen by a Formula One driver in history during the 2023 season. The triple world champion broke no less than seventeen records some of which had stood for over half a century.
