In a gaffe that has sent the Formula One community into a frenzy, the Williams team appear to have inadvertently revealed their driver line-up for the 2024 season, with all signs pointing to American driver Logan Sargeant retaining his seat.
As the last team on the grid to officially announce their full line-up for the upcoming season, speculation has been rife as to who will partner Alex Albon, who has secured his position after impressive performances since joining the team in 2022.

Vowles hints that Sargeant might not be with the team
Sargeant, whose contract was up for renewal, found himself in a precarious position after a difficult rookie season in which he managed to add just one point to Williams’ tally, in stark contrast to Albon’s 27.
Despite the uncertainty, Williams’ boss James Vowles had previously expressed reservations about Sargeant’s initial recruitment, suggesting that a different decision might have been made under his leadership.

However, a seemingly innocuous radio exchange in the closing stages of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix suggested continuity for Sargeant. The post-race message from his race engineer, Gaetan Jego, praised Sargeant’s efforts throughout the year and looked forward to next season. Sargeant’s response, expressing his desire to continue with the team, and Jego’s confirmation that he was looking forward to next year, added fuel to the speculation.
‘P16 and we are seventh in the [constructors’] championship,’ his engineer Gaetan Jego said.
‘I think that was a good race. Thank you for this year, it was a pleasure to be alongside you this year. Thank you, mate.’
Sargeant responded: ‘Thank you guys very much. Obviously, we’ve had our ups and downs, but I really feel there’s momentum building, and just getting stronger and stronger.
‘Couldn’t have chosen a better group of people to spend it with. And yeah I just hope we can continue it. Thank you guys.’
Jego replied: ‘Thank you, Logan. Looking forward to next year buddy.’

Vowles praise for Sargeant
Vowles himself chimed in with praise for Sargeant’s development and contributions over the course of the season, hinting at a future together.
‘Well done, I’m sorry we didn’t have the car underneath you today to do more than that.
‘You’re contribution this year has been excellent. It’s been a proud moment to watch you grow across the season so far. Looking forward to the winter together and many more.’

However, when confronted with these suggestive comments, Vowles backtracked, clarifying that no official announcement had yet been made and reaffirming Sargeant’s long-standing relationship with the Williams Academy, regardless of the outcome of the 2024 line-up.
‘I’m afraid you’re getting ahead of yourself. But whatever happens, Logan has been in our academy for many, many years.
‘He will always remain a part of our academy. He’s still an excellently quick driver.‘
The slip has inevitably led fans and pundits to conclude that Sargeant is likely to remain at Williams, despite the team’s non-committal stance and Vowles’ subsequent attempt to downplay the significance of the radio message. If confirmed, Sargeant’s continuation with Williams would not only mean stability for the team, but also a new chapter for the American at the pinnacle of motorsport.
