Sainz set to agree new Ferrari contract extension

The Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team and Carlos Sainz Jr are close to reaching an agreement to renew their contract, which is due to expire this year.

Spaniard Carlos Sainz left McLaren at the end of 2020 to join the legendary Ferrari team, with whom he signed a two-season contract. This contract will come to an end at the end of the 2022 campaign, but the two parties have been discussing a renewal for several months now and only a few details remain to be settled before an agreement is reached, confirms the Madrid driver:

“It’s no secret that we are in negotiations, but I can’t tell you when we will agree on everything. But we are all happy, there are steps forward,” said Carlos Sainz after the Bahrain test, quoted by Corriere in Italy.

Ferrari confirms talks

For his part, Scuderia boss Mattia Binotto also confirmed talks with his driver:

“We are working on it every day, the intention is common, and it is only a matter of details before we find an agreement.”

It is understood that the talks between Sainz and Ferrari are for a two-year deal, which would mean that the Spanish driver would be committed to the Maranello team until the end of the 2024 season, as would his team-mate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari could also announce the renewal of Sainz’s contract before the start of the 2022 season, in order to “settle” the mind of its driver.

  1. Rather inevitable he’ll stay, so a question of ‘when’ not if or even if & when.

  2. Having both drivers ending their contracts at the same moment, seems to me not a good thing for continuety.
