Alonso on Bahrain quali: “Expect a few surprises”

The Spanish driver, Fernando Alonso, is preparing to make his return to the world championship with the Alpine team after two years away from the Formula 1 championship.

After leaving the McLaren F1 team at the end of 2018, the Spanish driver tried his hand at different categories such as Endurance or the Dakar with the Japanese manufacturer Toyota.

Now back to try to go for a third world title in F1, Fernando Alonso says he learned a lot during his step back and therefore finds himself in the seat of a modern Formula 1 with more experience.

“I’m really looking forward to the weekend in its entirety. This moment has taken a lot of preparation, not only with the team during the tests and the work carried out this winter in the two factories, but also on a personal level. “The two-time world champion explained to us on the eve of the first race of the season.

“Since I agreed to join the Alpine F1 Team, I have put a lot of effort into preparing myself physically and mentally for this season. ”

“I’ve learned a lot during my time away, especially about the different styles of racing, but I’m now back in Formula 1 and extremely motivated for this challenging season. It was fun to be back behind the wheel of an F1 car in testing, but I’m now looking forward to the race. ”

The French manufacturer’s team completed its entire winter test programme in Bahrain from 12th to 14th March without any reliability problems.

For Alonso, the team has managed to build a solid foundation ahead of a 2021 season that should offer some surprises according to the Spanish driver.

“We have covered a lot of kilometres in testing. This is important because it provides a solid foundation for the rest of the season. We also completed our entire programme during the three days in Bahrain, so we’re satisfied with that. ”

“Performance-wise, it’s too early to say anything. I don’t think we’ll know the true hierarchy until the first qualifying session on Saturday when everyone will have low fuel, the fastest tyres and full engine power. I expect a few surprises. ”
