Sergio Perez believes that the mistake of strategy made by his team in the Fornula 1 Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna was a lesson for Racing Point, who didn’t reproduce it last Sunday in Sakhir.
At Imola, the Racing Point driver seemed to be heading for a podium finish, but when Max Verstappen had to retire due to a supposed puncture on his car and the Safety Car went on track, his team immediately called him to the pit lane to put on new tyres.
After this stop, Sergio Perez found himself in sixth position and crossed the finish line in this position, which irritated Perez somewhat at the time, although he didn’t think to say it publicly.
But last Sunday in Sakhir, when the safety car entered the track, Racing Point didn’t make the same mistake and left their driver on the track in order to take the finish line ahead of his rivals.
“I think that obviously, after what happened in Imola when we made the wrong choice, under the Safety Car, we knew clearly what we wanted to do here [in Sakhir]. ” declared Perez after the race.
“Of course we stayed out [ during the safety car] and we were quite confident that I could go back on the tyres and go all the way to the end of the race. ”
During the first part of the race, Russell took the lead and was behind the Racing Point of Sergio Perez with cooler tyres after his pit stop, only to have to go back to the pits to change them again after a flat tyre.
But the Mexican believes that he could have held the British driver’s Mercedes until the finish line, even if he acknowledges that it would have been difficult.
“I think that with George, it was going to be tough. But I think I could have held him back, because we had a good rhythm.
“He was about two, three tenths, sometimes four tenths [of his lap quicker].
“Sometimes I would answer him. I think the closest he was was 2.8 tenths, but according to the information we had it took a difference of eight tenths in the lap to be able to overtake. ”
