McLaren chief operating officer Andreas Seidl has announced that Daniel Ricciardo will be treated equally with his new teammate, Lando Norris.
Although he is considered one of the championship’s top performers, the Australian will have no right passes and will have to prove himself before he can expect to be considered the team leader.
This choice has been justified by the fact that McLaren needs stability in order to focus on its main objective, which is to become a top-tier team again, especially as from 2021 it will be able to count on the power of the Mercedes engine to achieve this goal.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Andreas Seidl said:
“As long as I’m the team boss, no driver will start the season with number one status.
“We have a long way to go and we need two drivers treated equally, as we did in 2019.
“I am sure that Lando and Daniel will be a great duo not only from a sporting point of view but also as ambassadors for the brand.”
