Welcome to another week of TheJudge13 F1 Bar Exam.
Last week’s question(s): Can you name the driver, team, race and track where the photo was taken. Can you also name the car (type) and where the driver finished in the race?
The answer(s) I was looking for were: The driver in the photo was American Eddie Cheever driving JS17B-Matra for the French team Equipe Talbot Gitanes (Ligier-Matra) during the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix held at Zolder. Cheever qualified in 14th but managed to finish 3rd!
What to write, there is so much! Cheever, who’s racing career spanned an impressive 30 years and included Formula One, sports cars, CART and the Indy Racing League, was born on the 10th January 1958 in Phoenix, Arizon.
During his Formula One career Cheever participated in 143 World Championship Formula One races and started 132, more than any other American, driving for nine different teams from 1978 through 1989. In 1997, he formed his own IRL team and won the 1998 Indianapolis 500 as both owner and driver.
But the bug bit at a very young age, living in Italy (Rome), Cheever’s dad took him to Monza to watch a sports car race. Soon after the youngster started karting and won both Italian and European Karting championships at age 15. He worked his way up through the levels of European Formula racing, teaming with American Danny Sullivan in Formula Three and driving for Ron Dennis in Formula Two before making the jump to Formula One at the age of 20.
He never won a race but managed to get on the podium a total of 9 times and scoring 70 points during his tenure in Formula One.
Well done to Milestone11, Johnny, Chris, Mike and Cassius42!
