The 3rd round of the TJ13 Courtroom podcast is ready for public consumption and the courthouses Master Of Ceremonies, SpannersReady tries to tame the illustrious crowd once again. Had the only one on the panel, who speaks proper English, known beforehand what awaited him…

Making his second appearance on jury duty is the site’s well-spoken Project Manager John, carrying an Elephant rifle for reasons that only later became apparent.

Another repeat panelist is the Judge’s right hand man and Editor in Chief A.J., who tests out, how many names he can mispronounce and whether he can break Benetton’s 1994 refueling record. Lacking any high-octane petrol, he uses a substitute called ‘wine’.

Also for the second time the audience gets to listen to Matt’s thoughtful comments delivered from the other side of the pond. It appears he knows quite a bit about aaaassets.

The identity of the unfortunate fourth panelist could no longer be determined after he found himself accidentally stepped on by a Fat Hippo, so in absence of any other substitute, the over-sized mammal makes a debut appearance and sounds remarkably like Orson Welles’s younger sibling..

  1. I enjoyed teh 2nd part much more than the first. And for once I seem to be in agreement with FH, wrt to Putin’s chopping his way towards Transnistria. I also agree with Matt: What is currently happening is positively, so to speak, frightening.

    Re: Authoritarian F1

    Actually I made this observation way back during Spanky’s Nazi hour in 2008. I was shocked how tame and mild was the manufacturer’s response to the revelations, and taht the guy wasn’t pushed straight into resignation: he actually was allowed to keep his job for one more year, wander about socializing and shaking hands. And mind you, this was considered as a concession as he was going to avoid seeking another mandate. What a sham!!

    I have been a lurker on the site for some time, and always recommend it to anyone I speak to about F1. While I have posted my views elsewhere in the “blogoshphere”, i have never done so here, fearing my lack of insight would be exposed. I would end up not coming back out of shame, and loosing the real joy of my weekday mornings, a cup of coffee and TJ13, the fist site of the day. But I must show my support for the podcast, and this opens the door…

    I was intrigued by the idea of the Hamster buying out Toto’s shares and driving for Williams. That seems like a perfect fit, too perfect for F1, as there is no controversy in it. I am going to ponder this for a while, as i am ashamed for not having thought of it myself.

    Ferrari seems to be built on the same foundation as Italy’s famous leaning tower. How much worse can it get? Mattiacci isn’t a very good liar either, a skill every team principal needs to master. The best answer he could prepare for the most obvious question of the day was “No Comment”? He states twice in 1 week that both drivers are “staying” next year? I think US politics have rubbed off on him. He is a temp anyway, no need to learn anything when you know your the fall guy.

    I also learned once and for all, that Toto has no business in his current position. He jumped in front of a camera after Spa, dropping the puppy he was later forced to chase. Then he accidentally opened the door to driver changes on the BBC. Today he talked in circles about Russia, with the look of a white tail deer on a runway. This might all be too much for him. Niki has been suspiciously quiet the last few days, maybe Dietrik put the smack down on them both, and that’s really how Toto broke all those bones.

    I believe it was fatHippo that spoke about data collection in regards to Honda coming in. This I believe is the lynchpin in the whole carnival. Without testing time, the teams cannot collect enough data. It is all about data. In order for the teams to maximize the amount of data they collect, they need to run more cars, the regulations have left them no other choice. The Red Bull-Toro Rosso model will become the standard by next season. I have predicted elsewhere that Ferrari will buy Caterham, and that was before they were sold the first time. Caterham is being stripped for parts like a 90’s Accord. The shell will be worth nothing to anyone who needs the rest, so it must be going to someone that already has the bits, and just needs the Title. Ferrari? Mclaren?, or does Mclaren buy Lotus? any way you look at it, by next season it seems we are going to have partnerships of some form, allowing the teams to essentially run 4 cars, at least in terms of data collection. How many years will Williams and FI be able to last in that environment?

    If Sochi gets cancelled, as I wholeheartedly believe it should, then Marussia is toast. There will be no reason for the Russian backers to spend another dime, even if they are able to get to their banks. If Marussia are not bought by Ferrari, it is probably over, 2 points or not.

    Lets hope Putin not getting to play with his shiny new F1 toy, doesn’t send him into a tantrum, for the whole f*cking worlds sake.

    I eagerly anticipate the upcoming site changes Judge. I look forward to the future of the podcast, one of my favorite mediums, and the fact I will be able to get it through more normal channels.

      It’s tough putting yourself on the line and exposing yourself to ridicule so thanks for pitching in. We should strive towards an atmosphere in the comments where people feel more able to speak freely without fear. To be honest this site is pretty decent for comments. I used to get sucked into Yahoo! Answers comments.. now that’s a lions den.

    Allowing the use of short clips by fanatics increase the views of sponsors = more money for all. Simple like that. But Bernie promised exclusivity for cable channels = More money only for Bernie.

    Re: Parabolica and Safety

    It’s a business question. Safer tracks means less expenses for teams but less challenging races means lower tv ratings. In the end this business needs audience.

  5. As I posted on the DN&C yesterday, Outstanding job guys, you nailed that ‘mates together’ harmony, similar to how BBC was when they had Jake, Eddie and DC, you know, the banter flows and the cameras/ recording equipment are just incidental to the situation.

  6. Re: Tarmac vs gravel

    I’m surprised that people keep insisting that gravel *reduces* safety, namely citing the increased chance of the car flipping. Well, that’s *one* type of safety risk. But gravel *increases* safety when the car loses its brakes or skids uncontrollably for any other reason, since it slows down the car before it reaches the barriers. So what we’re talking here is about *risk trade-off*: removing gravel may reduce one type of risk, but will increase another type of risk.

    And if people are seriously concerned about cars flipping, then remember that the risk of a car flipping from wheel-to-wheel contact is much higher (think Crashtor on Gutierrez). So if you’re genuinely concerned about that, then you would also support closed-wheel cars..

    • Don’t give them ideas mate? They are already looking at cockpits and looking at Indycar they’ve got body parts around the rear of the wheels/car to prevent cars launching.

      I’m with John on this one, racing is dangerous… That’s why some of us do it. Some people jump out of planes, off bridges or cliffs for their thrills.

      If they are scared they don’t so why should racing be any different? If your scared you are going to get hurt why race?

        Yup, indeed so. Proper racing tracks should be surrounded by gravel and grass, with any *additional* parking space before the barriers that the regulator fancies. (Basically, what @j was suggesting on several occasions.) Only in very specific circumstances where the risk trade-off is improved (like in much of Spa) should we see tarmac next to the racing line.

        Proper racing drivers should think thrice before daring to brake too late, and it’s only then that we would see genuine ability from drivers. If you get it wrong, kitty litter. Only the bestest won’t get it wrong, while the average will simply never dare to get anywhere near the limit and thus go slow. (Moreover, if F1 wants more viewers, bring on the kitty litters: The more drivers in the kitty litter, the more people will enjoy looking at replays.) Personally I find it outrageous how Britney and Bozo outbrake themselves 3-4 times during Quali, without getting even a whiff of penalty on their chassis.. If gravel were there, they’d think much more before putting themselves in that position.

    A point regarding social media use, and I hate to cite Nascar as an entity that’s technologically ahead of F1 but it is in this regard by some margin. The France family owned sport of Nascar take a lot of the promo responsibility on themselves which include a coherent, targeted Social Media marketing strategy. For example, how many times have we gone to a track such as Silverstone and suffered with stupidly poor 3g signal? At a Nascar event you get free to use high speed WIFI…. Crazy F1 hasn’t cottoned on to what SM is all about yet with its wealth of intelligence

Regarding simulators: I’ve spent a number of years now in F1 PC simulators, and what I’ve found is that when you’re really concentrating, racing hard against someone or in the last stages of qualifying, it becomes very intense – and you can somehow “feel” what the whole car is doing as you drive it into a corner. It’s the damndest thing. Especially on great tracks. I also think the danger thing isn’t really a factor, because with that level of concentration your simply not thinking about walls or trees or bridges waiting for you on the outside of corners, there’s no spare brain capacity for that.

    Regarding Sochii: Making Abu Dhabi triple points is insane, first of all. I suspect the Sochii race will still go ahead. Ukraine and Russia have already agreed on a ceasefire.

    Regarding Spa: Nice to hear Hippo standing up for Rosberg, a bit, in the pit of Hamilfosi vipers 😉 . This (hopefully) will be the scandalous part of the season, and I still can’t believe how Rosberg is penalised and forced to apologise by the team for what the team call a racing incident.

      I see your point, but I’m not sure of that. When you say ” it becomes very intense – and you can somehow “feel” what the whole car is doing as you drive it into a corner.”, I suspect that this becomes true of the track itself. You start sensing every corner as it arises, and you start “feeling” exactly where you can push just that little harder, and where it is a no-go or else..
