The #F1 Bar Exam: 23 January 2014

Welcome to the 4th Bar Exam of 2014.

Last week’s question(s): Can you name the driver, team and car in the photo? Can you also name the year and circuit at which the race was held?

The answer(s) I was looking for were: The driver of the car was Michael Simon Brindley Bream Beuttler or Mike Beuttler for short. He was a British racing driver who raced privately entered March cars. The car in the photo is the March 721G/731 – Cosworth V8 (March-Ford) and at the time belonged to a team called Clarke-Mordaunt-Guthrie-Durlacher, the team name derived from a group of stockbroker friends of Beuttler who they financed his racing.

The photo was taken during the 1973 Spanish Grand Prix which was held at the Montjuïc circuit, a former street circuit located on the Montjuïc mountain in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is considered among the best Formula One circuits of all time.

Beuttler finished the race in 7th position, his best ever finish in Formula 1. He retired the following year and moved to the United States where he died of AIDS related complications in 1988 aged 48. To date he is the only known homosexual Formula 1 driver.

The last Formula One Grand Prix held there in 1975, is notable for both a fatal crash that led to Formula One abandoning the venue and the only occasion to date that a female driver has scored World Championship points.

Here is a video of the race for those who are interested:

Well done to RogerD, Tony, Philip, Johnny, Stephen, Cassius, Kyriakos, Sid, AV2290, Taflach, Mike, Tim, The13thDuke, Peevve and Karbry!

This week’s question(s): Can you name the two drivers and their teams in the picture. Can you also name the race, who won it and what impact financial trouble for teams had during this race?
