Hamilton’s Ferrari demands reportedly rejected as Elkann grows frustrated with Leclerc feud

Lewis Hamilton’s reported demands for greater priority at Ferrari have added another layer to the growing tension between the seven-time world champion and Charles Leclerc, with team principal Fred Vasseur reportedly refusing to establish a clear hierarchy between the two drivers.

According to a report by Rosario Giuliana for Autoracer.it, details have emerged of a face-to-face meeting between Hamilton and Leclerc at Interlagos following their increasingly uncomfortable relationship at the Mexican Grand Prix.

While Vasseur is understood to have acted as mediator, the meeting reportedly exposed differences over how Ferrari should manage its two drivers, with John Elkann also said to be unhappy about the damage the dispute is causing to the team’s image.

Hamilton and Leclerc hold crucial meeting in Brazil

The meeting took place on Friday evening in Brazil, following Leclerc’s return to the paddock after the birth of his daughter, Bianca.

Relations between the pair had deteriorated following their on-track confrontation in Mexico, where Leclerc’s opening-lap manoeuvre became a significant talking point within the team.

Hamilton was reportedly unhappy with the incident, believing it had cost Ferrari an opportunity to challenge for a stronger result, potentially including a one-two finish.

The disagreement continued into the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, with Hamilton making comments during the media sessions that added to the tension.

Leclerc, who was absent from the Thursday media activities, had also been criticised by Hamilton over their respective approaches to racing, leaving Vasseur with an increasingly difficult situation to manage.

Hamilton reportedly sought priority over Leclerc

According to Giuliana’s account, Hamilton allegedly went further during the meeting by requesting a degree of preferential treatment.

The British driver reportedly pointed to his position, albeit by a relatively small margin, ahead of Leclerc in the Drivers’ Championship as justification for receiving greater consideration.

However, Ferrari’s position appears to remain unchanged.

Vasseur has consistently maintained that neither driver should receive automatic priority, with the team committed to treating Hamilton and Leclerc equally.

The approach is notably different from the much-discussed papaya rules employed by McLaren during the previous season, when Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were required to operate within an agreed framework of racing principles.

Ferrari’s message, as understood from the report, is that the interests of the team must come before those of either individual driver.

That stance could become increasingly difficult to maintain if the relationship between Hamilton and Leclerc continues to deteriorate.

Elkann reportedly unhappy as Ferrari’s image suffers

The situation is also understood to have attracted the attention of Ferrari president John Elkann.

According to the report, senior management are frustrated by the public nature of the disagreement and the negative attention surrounding the two drivers.

Hamilton’s influence within Ferrari is considerable. His experience, achievements and global profile give him significant standing, while his arrival was expected to help accelerate the team’s ambitions.

However, Giuliana’s report suggests that his position inside Maranello is not necessarily as straightforward as his reputation outside the organisation might imply.

Although respected by engineers and mechanics, Hamilton can reportedly be perceived as an outsider seeking to change established working practices.

That creates a delicate balancing act for Vasseur and Elkann, particularly if the team principal continues in his position beyond the current season.

Ferrari must decide how much freedom to give Hamilton while ensuring that Leclerc, who has been central to the team’s long-term plans, does not feel marginalised.

Bearman watches Ferrari situation with interest

One additional subplot concerns Oliver Bearman.

The Haas driver has yet to see his contract renewal formally announced, with speculation continuing about his longer-term ambitions and the possibility of eventually securing a Ferrari race seat.

Bearman remains an obvious candidate for future consideration, having already demonstrated his potential during his early Formula 1 appearances.

The report suggests that the uncertainty surrounding Hamilton and Leclerc could make the situation particularly interesting as Ferrari considers its longer-term driver line-up.

There is no confirmation that Ferrari is preparing to replace either driver, nor that Bearman has been promised a promotion.

Nevertheless, the team’s current difficulties underline the importance of its next decisions.

Ferrari signed Hamilton to help deliver championship success, while Leclerc remains a central figure in its future. Managing those competing priorities may prove just as important as finding performance on track.

For now, Vasseur’s refusal to establish a clear number one appears to be the team’s preferred solution. Whether Hamilton and Leclerc can accept that arrangement for the remainder of the season is another question entirely.
